The Soviet Commies outlawed the "Christmas Tree" until 1935, when they co-opted/relabeled the tradition, called them "New Year Trees" and installed them in schools, Pioneer clubs, etc..

I can easily see the Durham-Obama-Davis comrades with a Soviet New Year Tree. After all remember the Obamas decorated the White House Christmas Tree with the Mao ornament:

Good theory, but the word “Christmas” is visible upon the wall in the background of two pictures. I think the wife and kids would have DEMANDED they celebrate Christmas, at least so far as a tree and presents.
