A New York bus monitor who was berated and bullied by a group of middle school students has received more than $200,000 in online donations.

Karen Klein, 68, is seen in a 10-minute viral video attempting to ignore the verbal attacks by students on a bus operated by the Greece Central School District, near Rochester, N.Y. Children on the bus hurl repeated insults and threats at the grandmother, calling her fat and at one point suggesting that her children commit suicide.

But donations have since poured in for the grandmother in hopes that she’ll take a “vacation of a lifetime,” according to fundraising site indiegogo.com. As of midday Thursday, a total of $201,925 had been received for Klein and the video had been viewed on YouTube more than 1.6 million times.

Tax exemption only applies to the first $13,500.

That exemption is on the gift-giver, not the recipient. The recipient of the gift pays nothing in taxes.

“You do realize that the ability to recognize sarcasm is inversely related to IQ?”

This is good news for me I guess, all this time I was thinking they were directly related. Next time my wife does a facepalm because I failed to understand she was saying something sarcastic, I can simply tell her that I’m late for my meeting with Mensa :-)

Well, I’m assuming it was a kid, whom ever it was back there filming it on their phone.

Karen was on Fox this AM (video on National Review’s home page, to the lower right. They all referred to the perps as “the boys”. But they are middle schoolers and some haven’t hit puberty.

..and unless there are drastic changes in their character, they will never become men, even after reaching puberty.

She shouldn’t have to pay taxes under the gift portion which should exempt small gifts.

Someone said it was only one particularly nasty little girl, but it’s a shame no one came to her defense.

I hope some benificient financial planner helps her invest her new-found money some place safe.

My first thought as well. I would hate for her to become the next Joe the Plumber or Sarah Palin, hectored to death by opportunists. By the time she changes all her contact addresses, installs a security system and hires a publicist and a lawyer, there goes a lot of the donations.

There was a time (I think) when this grandmotherly figure would have received affection from a bunch of kids.

As for whatever jerk thought she should have stood up and fought... well, there’s a lot of bravery behind a keyboard, isn’t there.

I think she did the right thing by staying in her seat.

Hey, that little girl is someone’s special little snowflake, and has never done wrong and it’s the bus monitor’s fault.

That said, surely there are even worse injustices in the world than being a grown-up having cruel words flung at you by children

An injustice involves money or property. This woman was attacked on the most deeply personal terms imaginable. It was a verbal rape. At one point she opened her mouth to express astonishment at what they were saying, and her tormentor said, "I'm going to f*****' s*** in your mouth." They also said that she was so ugly, her children should commit suicide. Sadly, her son had committed suicide ten years ago. Those children totally abrogated her basic humanity. They should be hauled up for hate crimes.

If the donors were sending small amounts directly to her, that wouldn’t be taxable, but they seem to be sending donations to an aggregator, who will give the lady a single large sum. I don’t know what the standard Federal treatment would be for that, and (knowing New York) it’s probably taxable at the state level.

Great, now that the story is out there, the taxman will cometh.

Had she kept it quiet, it’d be tax free.

Unfortunately, there are schools and some school districts who put up with crap like this. I’m sure this is not the first time these “students” talked to a school employee in that manner before.

Those creeps probably act that way in class as well - and, the sad, tragic, outrageous thing is - they know there is nothing you can do about it. You can send them out of the classroom, but they’ll be back. Suspension is a vacation for these kinds of kids.

On the other hand - it doesn’t have to be this way. The problem is some principals, teachers, and school districts are so lawsuit fearful that some of them are literally afraid to remove these kids permanently from the classroom (or bus).

Believe it or not, there are strong district superintendants and strong principals who can and do put a stop to this kind of insanity. They will be in court a lot, but you have to stand up to this crap. When teachers know that the administration will stand behind them and remove consistently disruptive kids, not only from their classrooms, but also from the school itself, this frees them up so they can exercise really authority and maintain disiplined classrooms - which is absolutely necessary for teaching to take place.

I hope the outrage this video creates will put the focus on the school district this lady is from and will give them a spine to remove those kids from the bus. Bus drivers and bus monitors do NOT have to put up with that kind of crap - unless they have no one to back them up. I don’t know if that is the case here, but I’m guessing it is.

Good Lord, the schools give these kids everything today - from school supplies to breakfast, lunch, and dinner (FREE at taxpayer expense) to “free” transportation! If these brats do not know how to ride a bus like a decent human being then that district has the authority (if they choose to exercise it) to remove them permanently from their bus system and make the parents bring them to their “alternative school”.

Because the purpose of the new bullying laws is to enforce the unopposed spread of sexual deviance — not to prevent bullying.

Come Sept. I'll be starting my 30th year of teaching (mostly 7th and 8th graders.)They can be a difficult lot,and to be perfectly honest I've noticed an increase in the number of kids that are oppositional defiant.

Regardless, the great majority of that age group are good kids just trying to fit in.
