He’s facing “prison justice,” a thing far more horrific than anything the legal system can formally do. For the rest of his life he will be in perpetual terror, waiting for the shank that will inevitably end up in his innards, unless he chooses to spend the rest of his life in 24/7 solitary. Unless he absolutely believed in God and Hell, he should have hanged himself or eaten a gun. Now he’s sure of pure Hell for the rest of his life on earth and, possibly, for the rest of all time. Many people in this kind of a spot would bet on there being no after life and done what Hitler, Himmler, Goebels, and Goering did and commit suicide.

The only problem is, there’s not one mention in any of the coverage about changing the culture that allowed this to go on for so long: A football program that no one dared say anything that might be injurious to “the program”.

I’m not blaming Paterno, I’m blaming the entire football culture in State College, Pennsylvania. When the university has become little more than life support for a football team and the amount of money it brings in and is therefore untouchable and sacrosanct, something is wrong.

Look at the Notre Dame football program—a kid running a video camera on a practice in high winds was KILLED and all they did was pay a fine, and not even a large one.

Four people fell on their swords, two are being prosecuted, one is spending the rest of his life in jail and one died soon after being fired—but the football culture at Penn State won’t change. No one will want to disrupt what is an ATM for the rest of the institution. No one will want to irritate alumni with open checkbooks any more than they already have.

What does it tell you when a football coach makes more than the president of the university?

Despite what generations of slack-jawed Bobby Knight apologists keep saying as their sole justification for his antics, “budd-eeee wee-yuns BAWWWLLLL games” is not anywhere close to a sufficient reason to allow these untouchable juggernauts to exist under the guise of “extracurricular” departments at a college.

The Penn State press release on the conviction is eerily silent on any mention of a change in the football culture that allowed this to go on as long as it did.

That’s one question they won’t answer.
