1) It allows AZ police to collect statistics on the number of illegals that ICE refused to take action upon, which could be handy leading up to November.
2) Obama's decision to not take action is not binding on a future President (although whether Romney will do anything different is something we may have to see).
3) If the republicans take over the federal government, all it will take is one piece of legislation giving the states the power to arrest illegal aliens.
So do I.
I was a bit fuzzier on this one than the HC mandate. I am not surprised by nor all that disappointed by their ruling on this, at least as I understand it so far. Whenever I look at these immigration laws, I try to put myself in the shoes of a legal, naturalized US citizen from Mexico driving down the road in a beat up car (because it is all that I can afford). What kind of police involvement in my life would be expected, assuming I did nothing more than something warranting a speeding citation?

Lot’s of sad faces here today, but I do think it was the constitutionally correct decision.
AZ cops can stop and check immigration status but can’t stop someone from “making a nod or gesture” outside of, say, a Home Depot on the off chance that that person might a) be looking for work and b) illegal.
We don’t want to make the same mistake that Dumb0’s supporters do; granting executive power to someone simply because we agree with the goal opens up the faucet to the next pres, with whom we disagree, uses that power for something that we don’t like.
Same here. Immigration is a Federal concern, even if, as with Dumb0, he chooses not to enforce it. We need the laws in place and constitutional so the next person who becomes pres wont’ abuse his authority - whether at the Fed or State level.
Well... once again the illegals and their La Raza, Lulac and MechA sponsors win big vs. America.
This wouldn’t be quite so troubling were it not for a federal government trading our national sovereignty for hispanic votes.
By present trends, we are someday going to cease to exist as a nation. There’s no other way to view this.

Roberts screwed us. The only thing AZ is allowed to do is tell the feds they found someone is here without papers. We cannot detain that person, penalize that person for working in Arizona, or do anything to inconvenience that person.
Just tell Obama that someone is here without papers, and then wait for Barry to enforce the law.

The way they first took a look at the law may give a clue how they will decide. It looked like a large order of asperin at the time. Not so crazy.
Maybe, maybe not. Roberts sided with the libs to strike down the AZ law and that was with the Kagan recusal.
Actually it's my understanding that CJ Roberts joining the majority on Arizona was more tactical than a reflection of his actual views. If he would have joined Alito, Thomas, and Scalia. The court would have split 4-4 (Kagan recused) and the 9th circuit ruling striking down ALL of the Arizona law would have stood. So in joining with the majority he got Arizona 1/4 of a loaf, which I suppose is better than nothing.
Based on what???? The opinion issued today. Arizona and Healthcare are two SIGNIFICANTLY different cases. Roberts, despite how some people are lambasting him here, tends conservative. If Kennedy is in on the opinion, he’s siding with the conservative justices. Ginsberg came out earlier and stated that the Court was SHARPLY divided on healthcare. Those aren’t the words of someone who has won a victory. No, it’s not in the bag. But I don’t see the need for all the fear either....
What seems lost to many is that the most critical part of the bill, Section 2B, was upheld.

Immigration, is as always, a federal mandate. The US wins. California can’t issue visa waivers.
Why would the Judicial Branch have to 'throw a bone' to the Executive Branch? That makes a mockery out of "Separation of Powers." And the fact that any justice feels that he needs to throw the President a bone, is quite disturbing, if true.
