We owe the dead nothing. We owe the future everything.

I’ve said, for decades, that I’ll agree to do anything for a person after they die. But their death nullifies the verbal contract.

I understand your sentiment, but beginning in November of 2008, whenever I am at a public gathering where the star spangled banner is sung or performed, I turn my back on the flag. Yes, it can be uncomfortable with all those people behind me looking at me. But what price freedom?

I realized today that I am like the Mel Gibson character in the movie “The Patriot”, before his son was killed. It is apparent to me that a lot of us are. But that moment will probably come for all of us, in its way. I hope and pray not, but I am a student of history. I know how things work out. And times may change, but people don’t.
