Former UNC President Bill Friday says Andy Griffith died this morning in Dare County. Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed that to WITN News.

Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie confirms to WITN News that an ambulance went to Andy Griffith's home at 7 a.m. this morning.

The sheriff says he is checking to get more information on the condition of the person who the ambulance was called for.

The 86-year-old Griffith lives on Roanoke Island, not far from the Lost Colony, a play he performed in right after high school.

Griffith was born in Mount Airy, and is most known for his role as "Andy Taylor" from 1960 to 1968.

In the early 1970’s I saw the play, Six Characters in Search of an Author starring Andy Griffith on TV. That is when I began my lifelong appreciation of the theater. He was brilliant in it as he was in the movie, A FACE IN THE CROWD.

He will always be remembered as Sheriff Andy, but I hope he is remembered as the fine dramatic actor he was as well.

RIP, Mr. Griffith.

He was a pretty hard core liberal, just like most Hollywood types.

I will say one thing for him. He was one heck of an actor and I mean serious actor, not just a comedian.

Nice timing.

Griffith was a total communist and hated this country. He was a bitter resentful person as Libs usually are.

From everything I have read about him he treated his fans like total shiiiiite when asking for autographs etc...he was not the kind, old gentleman that was portrayed on screen.

RIP Andy! He was always my childhood hero and I think I saw every episode ever made. I was a little disappointed when I found his political leanings but not as much as I was with Opie, Ron Howard.

Ha! Now he can vote for Bonzo as many times as the Rats need him to do so.

A good actor perhaps, but not a thing like “Andy Taylor” in real life.

Years ago, before I found out his Democrat proclivities, I’d have expressed condolences. I will not, however, now.

This is one time I don’t even want to know.
The Andy Griffith Show is my favorite show of all time. I can watch it dozens of times, and I have, and laugh everytime.
Otherwise, Andy Griffith is in God’s hands now.

He won’t be remembered for the libtard dementia of his later years....
Stuff like “What it wuz wuz football”...among other bits were hilarious. But...

He will always be Sheriff Taylor.

RIP, Andy

Should one mourn an individual who was committed to the destruction of his own country even with the best of intentions?
