On Friday’s “Special Report,” Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer warned that Americans should expect Israel to attack Iran if President Barack Obama’s re-election appears likely.
Krauthammer explained that there could be a punitive response from the Obama administration, which would be less likely before he is re-elected.
“If they think Obama will win reelection I think it’s likely they will attack before, because afterwards there is no way to tell how Obama would punish Israel and they would be vulnerable to sanctions and other measure of the United States,” he said.
Krauthammer reminded viewers of the time frame advanced by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta earlier this year, and explained how that is a sign that “the clock is running.”
“The window is between now — remember, the Secretary of Defense said earlier in year that Israel would have attacked by now, attack in April, May, June,” he continued.
“The clock is running. They are simply waiting to make sure that the sham negotiations are declared over, rather than put on life support — to say all options have been tried and now we have to defend ourselves.”
If Israel attacks Iran, say in September, Obama will not be able to punish Israel before the election without alienating American Jewish voters. That could cost him the election. Too, Obama would be pressured to support the attack rather than condemn it. That means he cannot then punish Israel AFTER his reelection given his support BEFORE the election.
For those of us who want Obama to lose in November, there is a potential added bonus. If Obama is seen as “leading from behind” AGAIN, & does his usual bumbling rendition of Commander-in-Chief, this will hurt his chances in November. Obama will be forced to defend our interests in the Gulf, & nobody expects him to do a very good job of it.
I can easily see Obama causing a lot of death & destruction as a result of his military incompetence. Recall the FAILED rescue attempt in Iran by Jimmy Carter. Eight helicopters were a deadly joke - it should have been 800 aircraft over Iran. It hurt Carter bad.
If Israel attacks Iran, Iran will respond against Israel, the US, the Gulf States, & Saudi Arabia. Given the narrow confines of the Gulf, US ships & bases are likely to be hit & lives lost. Obama will be forced into the war ill prepared politically. Two months of poor war management could doom his reelection.
Some of you will think, "Wait a minute. The USA has the most powerful, well trained military in the world. We can whip Iran easily". Well, you are right, but if it is led by an incompetent, politically motivated narcissist, who makes strategy based on opinion polls, we could take some serious damage before competent leadership is established, if ever. Vietnam comes to mind.
Israel holds some powerful cards in the US reelection. Will they play them?

Republicans can NEVER win close elections nationally as the Democrats control the large urban voting blocks and the opportunities there for croooked dealings are immense.
Romney had peaked sometime back and Obama is recovering.
If the Israelis struck NOW, it might HELP Romney as Obama will be hard pressed to criticize them or the Muslims at this stage of the election process.
It looks like the electorate doesn’t like Obama and doesn’t like his policies - but not by much. But they don;t like Romney. He has been made to look like a wealthy, out of touch elitist and has done nothing to effectively dispel that image, or, even more, attack Obama on his weak points.
Romney booster Dana Perrino was on Fox this morning and she sounded disillusioned with her partty choice Romney.
If the GOP can’t beat Obama or at least take over the Congress at this stage, its time to abandon them, form a third party and lump them in with the Democrats as enemies of America,

What get me about Krauthammer is that he couldn't see (or refused to see) what so many of us saw about Obama - that he's a narcisstic, arrogant creep who sees everything through a racial prism. Kraut is a psychiatrist - why wasn't it patently obvious to him?

I doubt that any of the Jewish politicians who are currently well-known will ever win the Presidency (Chuck Schumer? Barney Frank? Debbie Wasserman Schultz? Rahm Emanuel? Eric Cantor? none of them are very plausible), I think it's possible for a Jew to be elected President--the negative effect of anti-Semitism that would cause people not to vote for a candidate of their party just for that reason is probably much less than what JFK overcame in 1960 with regard to anti-Catholicism.
