Like you, I didn't know what to do when it became apparent that Karl Rove and others like him were going to succeed in providing us with Mitt Romney as the GOP alternative to Obama. I had hoped that in this important election year the two major parties might present us with "a choice not an echo." It has now become apparent that elitists in the GOP have no real objection to the recent direction and course of our nation, but merely want the power and glory that they associate with taking their turn at the nation's helm.
In 2008, I voted for McCain, thinking I had no sensible alternative. I was not alone. So many conservative voters held their noses and voted for McCain that GOP bigwigs learned or thought they learned that they can count on us to support anyone that they put forward as an alternative to Obama this year. Yes, even Mitt Romney, a lifelong liberal, a man who has promised to preserve and protect abortion rights, a man who has promised to promote the homosexual agenda, a man who is now known as the Godfather of Obamacare, a man who refuses to protect our right to bear arms, a man who earned some part of his vast fortune by trafficking in the bodies of little boys and girls after they were murdered in abortion mills, and a man who has been instructed since his earliest days to look upon Christianity as an inferior faith in need of evolution.
I have decided that we have gotten to where now find ourselves because too many of us, including me, have been tricked and deceived into voting for liberals. I know now that we will quit being given liberal nominees only when we quit supporting (and we are seen to quit supporting) liberals. It's that simple.
So, for me, the choice is easy this year. I will be voting against both Romney and Obama. I have decided to cast a vote that I can feel good about. I will be proudly casting my vote for Tom Hoefling. Win or lose, I won't be looking back with shame or regret.
It's going to be a good year for me!

The alternative is to stop giving up every four years and asking the question "So, seriously, what is the alternative?"

If, instead of voting for the liberal, Conservatives would simply vote for the actual Conservative, it would make all the difference. You wouldn't have to listen to wingnuts screech "Ahhh, if we don't vote for the slightly less liberal, there will never be an election again." every four years - with the empty promise of "next time".
Seriously, with mitt in the White House, what's the GOPe's motivation for ever pushing a Conservative agenda or candidate ever again?

Lots of folks here want to claim that the reason Romney is the GOP nominee is because either (1) the "GOP-e" somehow forced him on us, or (2) conservatives failed to coalesce around one of our perfectly good conservative candidates (say, Perry, Santorum, and Gingrich) thereby allowing Romney to secure the nomination with only a plurality of support.
I think both of these explanations are wrong. I think the GOP primary electorate was mainly concerned with beating Obama and chose Romney because overall they thought he was the most likely to accomplish this.
That is why I ask whether folks think we'd be better off right now with one of the other three as nominee. I don't think we would. I want to win and I think all three of those others would already be toast by now if they had somehow won the nomination.
It is common for anti-Romney FReepers to talk about looking folks in the eye, or standing before God etc., and explaining a vote for Romney. This is so much demagoguery. Politics is about making a difference, Romney is different from Obama, and he has a good shot at winning.

Nonsense. It's preposterous to imply that conservatives can't have differing opinions as to whether it's reasonable to vote for Romney. Dick Cheney is supporting Romney. Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich, Perry, and Santorum too. Palin too. DeMint too. Paul Ryan, Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, John Bolton, Robert Bork, etc., etc. All supporting Romney. I have long suspected that you might be sensing in some of my posts some hint of an occasional anti-Romney bias. Sometimes, even I suspect that I may possess a bit of anti-Romney bias. I plan to work on that just as soon as I am done campaigning for Tom Hoefling.
