I agree. I am pushing 70 yrs old and came of age in the 1950’s. There was never a doubt who was in charge in a relationship between a man and a woman. It was built in to the culture. Men decided where to live (based on the job he had) women stayed home and raised the kids. Men decided when to buy a home and how much to spend and made all the larger decisions. This didn’t mean women had no say, they did but the final decision was made by the man and it was his responsibility to do so and get it right.
Things worked out just fine, we have been married 47 years.
I read with much interest your take on marriage and in some way was reminded of an argument,friendly, I often had with my uncle who had a socialist bent. He would always tell me that when I reached his age I would see things as he did. I always countered that his friend who was a few years older than my uncle agreed with me so as my uncle grew older he would see things as we did.The point being that in somethings it is more than just age and time that has meaning. Now for my take on marriage. I am probably 16 years older than you. I have been married 10 more years than you to the same lady and I say lady with affection because for one thing I have never heard her utter one profane word. My wife does our banking and I get my glad allowance. We share in making big, important decisions. I have faith and trust in my wife’s consideration for my welfare and I believe she has the same feeling about me. We have had our disputes and arguments, some very intense, but not any thing physical. So you see my take on our marriage is somewhat different than yours and as a WWII infantry vet I don’t consider myself a wimp.
That’s great! You have my respect, that is not an easy thing to do these days it seems. I hope more younguns can learn a thing or two from folks like you.
