(CBS News) CHICAGO - Chicago is in the grips of a deadly gang war. At least 275 people have been killed in the city so far this year and many more have been shot, many of them innocent bystanders to the gang violence. Among the latest victims were 12- and 13-year-old girls shot Tuesday night. They survived.
Sgt. Matt Little leads one of the teams in Chicago's Gang Enforcement Unit. There are about 200 such officers in the city-- versus 100,000 gang members.
"Almost all the violence we're seeing now is from the gangs," Little said. "When there's a shooting we'll respond to the shooting. We'll figure out where we believe the most likely area for retaliation is and we'll work that area trying to both prevent retaliation and possibly build a case on offenders."
CBS News rode along with Little's team as dusk fell on poor neighborhoods of vacant lots and high anxiety.
"The gangs have lost their hierarchy, so to speak, and without a chain of command, there's really nobody keeping things in check," Little said. The leaders are mostly in prison -- or dead. Those left are young, reckless, and often terrible shots.
"Instead of a bullet with somebody's name on it, we have a bullet that reads 'To whom it may concern,'" Little said. The result is a spate of shootings that have killed or wounded young children, even toddlers.

On a separate note, I noticed that the officer slipped and admitted it is ALL gang violence. Instead of cracking down on law abiding citizens, why don’t they just make possession of a gun by gang members a death penalty offense. I know it would never happen but why are they pretending that what they have been doing has any chance in hell of working?
It’s going to be more than Trayvon’s. Wait until all the illegals from other countries Rahm invited on the news today arrive. There is going to be a huge turf war and there will be no sanctuary for anyone.
Chicago needs to tax the “rich”. And ban gun ownership.

What a nice little public relations ‘news’ report for the pitiful Mayor of Chicago. He’s riding around with the cop who is utterly failing in his job to put gangs down, chirping like a parrot repeating the cop’s slogans. Not one independent thought, challenging failed business as usual.
Whatever the Chicago PD is doing, it’s not working. Time to mix it up before they turn Chicago into Detroit. At least he got one thing right - it is a tribal war. Liberals have finally succeeded in totally disconnecting Chicago blacks from their American idenity and into a bloody African idenity. And they should stop referring to gang members as ‘youth.’ If you are big enough to be in a gang and commit gang crime, you are big enough to be named a criminal or a thug.
If you have TuneIn on your phone you can listen to the police scanner for Chicago. The other night it was taking two hours to get an officer to a domestic call.
A guy that had been car jacked waited on the street for 1 and 1/2 hours for a police officer. The dispatcher kept saying, the car jack victim at so and so street called and said he is still waiting the.

Sad, but true. As a literal reference he is exactly correct. The other connotations will do him in. English is not spoken in America any more. Remember the guy that used the word niggardly and everyone got upset because they thought it was a racial slur.

Well.....these are Obama’s “folks” that he touts in EVERY, damned speech. (with that damned, folksy, lispy, changing-to-meet-the-demographic he’s speaking to... dialect of his).

Why would anyone want to stop gang warfare. Let them kill each other one by one. Their choice.

A large population of people that are amoral, uneducated, unemployable, lazy,that continue to vote for corrupt politicians are doomed. These people manage to increase the entropy of these cities into chaotic sh—t holes.
It is clear that there is no solution for this problem except massive failure of the current system with culling the barbarians.
When I see this happen in a Dem city with gun control, I just have to snigger.......

Maybe you are right and we need to send these “kids” to an army camp and learn how to shoot straighter.
