Why did Newsweek remove Barack Obama photos?

Why would someone photoshop a young Barack Obama into a photo of his grandparents sitting on a bench in Central Park? A photo that appeared in New Yorker editor David Remnick’s Obama bio, ‘The Bridge’.

Clearly it is the bottom photo that has been
photoshopped to erase the “O”.

Look at the repeated pattern in the cinderblock wall.

I thought airbrushing (or the modern equivalent, Photoshop,) was the venue of Marxist Soviet Union 30s and 40s politics.

How can anyone dismiss these revelations as inconsequential?
