DENVER –  The University of Colorado says shooting suspect James Holmes had a federal grant to study neuroscience.

University spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said Saturday that Holmes was one of six neuroscience students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money. She didn't know how much money he got.

The NIH says the university decides who gets the grants. Criteria for receiving the grant weren't immediately clear.

Montgomery says Holmes took an oral exam at the end of the semester that all students must pass to continue in the program. She says privacy laws prevent the school from releasing his score.

I might be tempted to speculate that his dad would have some experience with grant money for research relating to neuroscience, but not from NIH.

There’s another James Robert Holmes in this field in CA as well, is this an uncle?

Well at the very least, he must have used that road in front of his home and perhaps a bridge or two. So certainly barack owns at least some of his “success” if you want to put it that way.

Actually was offered a grant from a San Diego couple once myself. My customer told me his wife writes grant proposals and he said they could just about guarantee one for me. Told him it was against my libertarian principals to accept such money. Was a Libertarian then (GWB’s daddies fault). Been Independent for many years, but definitely Tea Party for the rest of my life now.

Taxpayer money funding Fast and Furious did not accomplish it’s objective of US citizen outrage against gun rights. Interesting that taxpayer money may have funded the guy committing this outrage. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Not to piss on anyones parade, but most phd students get work study/federal aid. Mba student like me, not so much. I don’t generate research income...

“That might explain where all the money for guns and ammo came from.”

It would certainly seem to. However, you know you are trying to deflate several emerging conspiracy theories. Now Obama is heading to CO Sunday so he must be part of this. Perhaps he personally directed to fund be awarded Holmes so he could buy weapons. Maybe Obama had the SS open the back door to the theater. Many things to be explored. ;-)

This is true. Many institutions and organizations in both the public and private sector provide funds to university departments to carry out research activities on behalf of the donor organization.

Typically PhD candidates participate in this research and receive compensation in the form of research assistantships.
This is pretty much a standard procedure. It provides aspiring PhDs with research experience and allows the donor organization the benefit of a temporary research team for short term research projects - leaving their researchers on staff time to concentrate on other projects.

I think it is important to remember that there are certain forms of mental illness involving brain chemistry that tend to surface in young people around late teens and in the twenties. It is usually unforeseen and is a family’s worst nightmare.

The saddest and most frightening element of this to me is that the illness is often accompanied with a resistance to seek treatment or care because usually the person has reached majority, making it virtually impossible for the family to intervene.

You get them through childhood and into young adulthood safely, then when something like this happens you realize your child is not out of the woods yet.

Ironically there may be a PhD student somewhere right now with a research assistantship working to learn more about how to detect this problems within the brain earlier so that these anomalies can be detected and treated early on.

I’ve dated more stoners that are phd candidates. They have plenty of time on their hands and cope with substances. Just my experience..

Point taken.

Yes, there is great diversity within PhDs. Most of those that I know are engaged in heavy duty scientific work and are pretty serious. On the other hand, there are others that are definitely more laid back.
