Near Riot Breaks Out After Officer-Involved Shooting In Anaheim
CBS) ^ | July 21, 2012 9:53 PM | Jay Jackson

A suspect was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Anaheim Saturday and a protest about that shooting later turned into a near riot.

The shooting took place in the 600 block of N. Anna Drive just after 4 p.m.

Residents, protesting what they say is an increased police violence against them in the community, started the near riot on nearby La Palma.

Jay Jackson, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said the scene was chaotic. More than six hours later, he said residents were still out in the streets protesting the shooting.

The residents blocked off a street and set fire to at least one dumpster.

Earlier in the day, police in riot gear, fired rubber bullets into the crowd. Several protesters lifted their shirts to show large red welts on their torsos and backs. Residents told Jackson that police overreacted and created the disturbance.

One man said, “They just started shooting.”

Police also set a K-9 officer on one woman and a bystander they said were agitating the situation.

Said Susan Lopez, “I had my baby with me. My baby! The dog scratched me and then grabbed me.” She added, “They shot at me while I was holding a baby!” Another woman yelled, “They just shot at us, they shot at a little kid, too.”

According to police, two patrol officers observed three male suspects in an alley.

Police said the suspects tried to flee on foot when a chase ensued.

The shooting reportedly occurred after one of the officers encountered one of the suspects in a courtyard.

The shooting took place in the 700 block of N. Anna.

The suspect, condition unknown, was taken to UCI Medical Center. Neighbors identified the man as “Stomper.”

No officers were injured.

The other two suspects are at-large.

Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Dunn said, “What exactly led to the shooting, we don’t know. We’re still investigating. But a shooting did occur. And the male was taken to a hospital.”

Authorities said the circumstances regarding the shooting were under investigation by members of the gangs unit and Orange County District Attorney’s office.

Four people told Jackson that police offered to buy their cell phone video.

Let the Amish riot. The Koreans are in Anaheim in full force. They won't stand by and get looted and burned without a fight. It'll be a win-win situation....minority fighting minority but my bets are on the Koreans.

....the same PD that beat a homeless man to death just last year?

That would be the Fullerton PD. Anaheim and Fullerton are right next to each other.

Funny to see some slight as well as overt signs of bigotry in this thread, against the blacks AND “blue”..

you can look up this neighborhood on google.earth. There's a ground image and about half a dozen people managed to get photographed.

looks basically hispanic, but maybe a couple of koreans in there too.

Very nice, neat well tended Anaheim residential area ~ near a highschool.

A riot? The latest updates on the stories are changing to "near riot" ~ and still no explanation for why the cops were shooting people.

Just did a total round robin on google.earth to see what this neighborhood really looks like. the grass is mowed. plants are planted. streets are shaded.

Upscale gangs?

Or, perhaps, the cops don't care where they are when they start shooting ~ and most folks in residential areas anywhere really don't like that ~ particularly if the rounds come through the walls.

Best to keep all of that in commercial districts with cement block walls or steel frame.

I've long thought that 10% of the posts you see are from Keith Olbermann trying to make conservatives look ignorant.

“hmm ~ been in the neighborhood ~ looped around N. Anna getting lost going to the Richard Nixon library.”

Hmmm. You sure were lost!! The two places are 6.8 miles apart!!

N. Anna is severe barrio.

The fundamental problem is that LE today has no relation to LE a couple of decades ago.

The entire industry was dumbed down and physicalled down in the interests of “diversity” about 20 or thirty years ago.

ALL the requirements that had evolved over many many years regarding physical ability, mental state of mind and motivation were gradually eroded in the name of “fairness”, just like everything else in our society today.

Now, we’re paying the price of that relaxation of standards and we have an LE industry littered with people who have no business in a position of authority of ANY kind, let alone one where they are legally empowered to use deadly force anytime they think it’s in their best interest to do so, and are encouraged, by their brotherhood, to then lie and coverup the facts.

For the first 60 years of my life, I had nothing but respect for any member of LE (even Traffic Enforcement) and always gave them the benefit of the doubt. Over the last five years or so, I’ve been doing a 180 on this matter, and no believe they are NOT my friend and haven’t been for a decade or so.

Oh sure, they’ll respond to crimes in progress (adrenaline junkies) and do some investigations from time to time, but for the most part they are bored with their day to day work environment and will FIND ways to harass the public and will strike back like a rattler when confronted (eg with cellphone recordings) about their questionable, overzealous behavior (eg “erroneous no knock assaults on the wrong household).

Sad state of affairs, brought on by diversity and fairness, coupled with ineffective internal disciplining.

Pulled in the shopping center on the North ~ got a better map, looped around Anna and back out to the East, then north, then East on the right road.

Recalled what we were doing there as soon as i saw the shopping center.

This particular neighborhood would seem to be in one of the oldest settled areas in Riverside County ~ and I mean old. When the Germans moved in these people were already there ~ had their town and farm sites laid out after the Law of the Indies!

Anna itself looks like it may have been around a plaza, with the rest of the area being 1940s rebuild ~

BTW, I ain't going there again, but it doesn't have the feel of a particularly nasty neighborhood.

NOTE: We were coming up SW of that area from the vicinity of Magnolia ~ and we hadn't got on a freeway ~ just those older county roads. It's easy to get lost on them if someone steals the road signs.
