Because no government can hope to rule a people completely, even with militarized police forces and a high degree of surveillance, they need a fascistic "religion" to rule people in their own homes. islam fits the bill. You are right, Islam is the most controlling system ever invented. It does use the family structure as part of its enforcement mechanism because it is really a cult. In a cult obedience to the leader (mohammed) is stronger than devotion to the family. You see that with Jim Jones, and that Arizona cult.
Islam grew very quickly because mohammed bribed his followers with loot from their raids then he picked off one tribe after another forcing the vanquished tribesmen to convert to islam and become part of his army. This is how his army soon took over nations. Of course, when they wom a war over a nation, they would force the enemy army to convert and become part of the moslem army. It was like a snowball rolling down a hill.
