It is foolish to believe that any such alliance will be the result of all this. Certainly not one which would benefit either the US or Saudi Arabia.

Nor do I believe there is anyone in this administration capable of conceiving or carrying out such a scheme.

Read my post 25. The State Department Arabists have a profound pro-Sunni bias and they are determined to isolate and punish Iran and its proxies for the insult of the 1979 embassy seizure. These people and the CIA are a permanent element of the government culture and can and do carry out long term policies. The people at state believe rightly or wrongly that most of the Middle East is culturally Islamist already so encouraging the Moslem Brotherhood-Saudi alliance to fund and help operate Sunni militias in Iraq and Syria is just logical. The Saudis have a ton of money and the Brotherhood has plenty of contacts and can line up the people to staff the new AQ in Syria and Iraq. For State it is just going with what they see as the natural flow of politics in the region for the CIA it is just pragmatism as the Sunnis are the really powerful group and the Shia are considered to be dangerously unstable so screw ‘em over if you can.
