More, better training needed for gun carriers (Milwaukee J-S barf alert)
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 27 july 2012

The state Department of Justice wants public input on how to make Wisconsin's concealed-carry law better. Our idea: Require firearm safety instructors to demonstrate and teach people how to safely fire and store their weapons.

Under the current law, those applying for a permit do not have to show that they are familiar even with the basics of a weapon. Ideally, all of those who apply for a permit would seek to take a gun safety course, but that should have been a requirement in the law.

Owning a gun is a huge responsibility. The state would not allow people to obtain their driver's licenses without demonstrating that they know how to drive a vehicle without training. The same principle should apply to those seeking a concealed-carry permit.

Nik Clark, chairman and president of Wisconsin Carry Inc., said requiring applicants to demonstrate that they know how to handle a weapon is another layer of bureaucracy that is not needed.

"If they want to do that, then they should allow you to take classes online to get your permit. You can get your MBA online, so why can't you get your concealed-carry training online?" Clark said.

This is ludicrous. The young men who do these mass shootings have been trained on video games since they were four or five. They are experts. You don’t have to worry about their marksmanship.

It’s not about the sociopaths who shoot people. It’s about the average CCW-holder, many of whom never darken the doorway of a range or take follow-on training. I share that concern, as I know many CCW carriers who act just that way. They are, arguably, a danger to themselves and others.

But I do not think the answer lies in legislating and regulating. How about making the costs of a CCW holder getting training a deductible expense—or better yet, a tax credit? That would yield the benefit of encouraging such training and professionalism.

In my area, you can’t get the CCL without the training.

Having said that, if I buy a firearm to keep in my bedside drawer in case of an intruder, I doubt I’ll need training beyond “wait until you see the whites of their eyes” IOW, make sure its not hubby up getting a drink of water.

I suppose this applies to other rights as well...?

That’s why I specifically said “follow-on training” KC. And besides, where do you live that a bedside gun requires a CCW permit? I never want to go there.

Better gun training needed for photographers, too - why the hell is he standing in front of the firing line to take the shot?

And while I’m at it:
1/ Take a look at Bambi-Sue’s grip. The support hand is held down halfway toward the teacup position.
2/ Why is the non-dominant eye closed, and the head bent over? ‘Cuz she saw the Weaver position in lotsa movies?
3/ Why has Billy-Bob, the instructor, pasted target dots on the nose and the chest of the target? (Assailants normally don’t wear them.)
4/ And why has he allowed her, in anticipation of recoil, to continue to push her shots down below the aim point.

Plenty of stupidity all around, but in any case, none of the Gummnt’s business...

Requiring a FEE for a Training class before a CCW is issued is unconstitutional ...IMHO
Do you have to take a journalism class before you speak or write a letter to the editor ?
What other constitutional right requires a fee ????
I do think you should pass a test for firearm safety and have an oral exam, then a range qualifying session.
I was taught to shoot by the US navy in 1968, i have been shooting ever since.
Why should I have to pay (in SC) $300 bucks for a training class i can most likely teach ????, Then a “processing fee of $50 bucks to the sheriff for the paper work.
I should be able to go down to the sheriff’s office take a 50 -100 question test and then be observed on the range, if I pass i get my CCW

Better not wish too hard for that - the test for the “K” license in Florida (Law Enforcement/Security Guard/Private Investigator firearms instructor) is an embarrassment. It uses imprecise terminology, hasn’t been revised in decades and was written by an illiterate. Example: It takes “Tap-Rack-Bang” as gospel.

I wasn’t clear was I?

To just buy a firearm no training is required - and it shouldn’t be.

To conceal carry a training course is required. I’m not sure if that’s a law, but the places I have checked for a CCL course will require me to take a class.

West Texas.

Clearly its meant only to be a further infringement. It has no other purpose. Should carry holders get education? I think so. However, that should be their choice (remember, libs are all about choice, right??) not the govts.
