NBC wants viewers to know: The kickoff of the London Olympics was just too complicated to watch live.
The network is fighting back against intense criticism of its decision to black out the opening ceremony on Friday, instead offering a taped version hours later in prime time. Viewers reacted with disgust when they tried to watch live coverage of the event on TV or online but could only find a few bootlegging sites carrying the feed in the U.S.
"We are live streaming every sporting event, all 32 sports and 302 medals," an NBC spokesman wrote in an email to Show Tracker. "It was never our intent to live stream the Opening Ceremony or Closing Ceremony. They are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them.

NBC always screws up the Olympics. Why do they keep getting it?
not only did they delay the broadcast, they treated the entrance of the athletes as if it were live with interruptions for commercials instead of simply stopping the tape and restarting it after the commercial.
I don’t know why but I’ve never seen them since I left home 33 years ago. Growing up I remember them on in the house but have never seen any of it since.

Huh? What? The reason people like online content is BECAUSE it is unedited and live, as if you were actually there. But the LSM elites believe the American public is too stupid to understand what is going on in front of them.
I don’t get it. If the opening ceremony could be meaningfully viewed by a person sitting in a seat in the stands, why couldn’t NBC provide a meaningful live production? I guess they felt like there was just too much going on and too many editorial judgements to make on the fly, like which camera angle to use and that sort of thing. But the ceremy was surely so scripted that all could have been mapped out in advance. So I don’t know...there must be more to the story.
Speaking for myself — I am totally incapable of understanding anything I see on TV unless Matt Lauer explains it to me. From the Rose Parade to the Olympics, Matt helps me understand the world and all the things I see in it. He even tells me what flavor kool-aid to drink.
I watched the BBC live stream and DVRed the NBC prime time broadcast. I gave up trying the watch the NBC broadcast shortly after the parade of athletes started. The annoying commentary, commercial breaks and selective editing made it impossible to watch.
I’m wound up about NBC’s Olympic handling right now. I don’t have cable TV, but I do use Time Warner for Internet; we watch TV with a Roku hooked to a 28” LCD monitor, which works perfectly for streaming Netflix and the like. But if you want to watch the live streaming Olympic coverage at nbcolympics.com, you MUST apparently have service with certain cable TV providers and you MUST apparently have a level of service that already provides you CNBC and MSNBC. If you don’t, you can’t watch the Olympics online.
To me, this is insanity. I would gladly pony up a pay-per-view fee for Olympic streaming coverage, on the Roku or on my computer, so my little girl can watch some of the events. She’d probably love gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics and she loves watching basketball. But because I don’t want to pay for the “privilege” of supporting Jim Cramer and Rachel Maddow, NBC makes it impossible for me to watch the Olympics *at all* via the Internet except if I find a pirated stream. It’s an insane and stupid business model.

I tuned in and saw Viera droning on about something. If they want to guarantee I don’t watch a show or event, then by all means put her on.

All of us ignorant hillbillies are too stupid to understand such a “complex” live production. It takes their city world traveled “experts” to explain it to us, /S
That just proves they have no clue who lives in the rest of the country outside the studios of NBC. Not everyone is an ignorant yahoo like they think.
To hear them explain it none of us have been outside of our “trailer park” for most of our lives. They might be shocked to find out differently.

Yeah, I found that out as well. I have T-W cable Internet, but we don’t have TV.
The Olympic stream site asks you for your provider - I entered Time Warner.
It showed about 5 frames of video then announced that I didn’t have the right service level.
I want to watch the thing on NBC Internet, but they won’t let me watch it on the net, because.... I don’t have TV.
How stupid is that?

I do have a qualifying Cable to watch via the Internet streams.
Earlier today, I was watching some of the men’s gymnastics. The feeds kept buffering — due to streaming problems from Youtube.
I have a feeling those streams are going to be overwhelmed and the effort will turn out to be a flop. Too many would rather watch the ‘out of context’ venues without the incessant commentaries.
