Harry Reid: Some Bain investor who I won’t name told me Romney didn’t pay income taxes for 10 years

Sounds solid. Mitt Romney, who's been running for political office for 20 years now, decided he'd gamble those prospects and risk time in a federal pen for tax evasion in order to save a few million dollars that he doesn't need.

And he made this decision year after year, for 10 years.

By the way, some random guy on the Internet told me Obama was born in Kenya. Now, do I know that's true? Well, I'm not certain. But let me just toss it out there.

"His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son," Reid said, in reference to George Romney's standard-setting decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in the late 1960s.

Saying he had "no problem with somebody being really, really wealthy," Reid sat up in his chair a bit before stirring the pot further. A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.

“Harry, he didn't pay any taxes for 10 years,” Reid recounted the person as saying.

“He didn't pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” said Reid. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?

“You guys have said his wealth is $250 million,” Reid went on. “Not a chance in the world. It’s a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions of dollars.”

No surprise that Reid would smear Romney so casually. He specializes in these tactics during presidential campaigns. In 2008, he made more noise about McCain’s temper being a sign of possible derangement than any other major Democrat. (He also insisted that he couldn’t stand McCain as part and parcel of the demonization effort, even though the two had been known to socialize.) He’s an unusually nasty character, even by normal political standards, when he wants to be; gratuitously accusing George Romney of being disappointed in his son is simply S.O.P. But he does have a strategy here: Pull an accusation of criminality straight out of his ass and hope it gets enough media play that Romney feels obliged to respond. Either Mitt will start to sweat and release his returns, as Democrats have demanded, in order to disprove Reid’s charge or he’ll sit tight and the smear will circulate online, with Romney’s refusal to disclose the documents taken as “proof” that Reid is right. In that respect, it’s not that different from Birtherism. It just so happens that you’ve got the Senate majority leader pushing this, not some commenter at dKos or wherever.

Exit question via Philip Klein: “How would ‘a person who had invested with Bain Capital’ know about Romney’s personal tax returns anyway?”

Would you believe me if I told you there are FReepers willing to accept Harry at his word on this?

Absolutely. There is a contingent on this site who would unhesitatingly believe anything negative about Mitt, regardless of the veracity of the source.

The traditional tale is that a Mormon will be (politically) whatever the Prophet wants him to be.

So the plan is that with this election the Mormons will turn up with the Presidency, the majority leader of the Senate (Orin Hatch), and maybe some guy in the House.

If the Republicans don't take the Senate the Mormons will still have Harry Reid.

Thought it was strange when we had a whole big bunch of Mittbots demanding Dick Lugar be dumped, and at the same time they said nothing whatsoever about equally senile and leftwingtard voting Orin Hatch.

Or, no, I didn't find that strange at all. Lugar is the only Republican with more seniority than Hatch.

You all do know that Mitt has these moments when he looks totally disoriented ~ not exactly vacancy seizures, but something like that. He'll look around as if it's all new and he hadn't been there before.

Well, the story is he put a message in the Wailing Wall the other day in Jerusalem, and somebody came along behind him and retrieved it.

It said "Beam Me Up Scotty".

I don’t have any use for Romney, but I won’t criticize him for not paying taxes.

Someone told me that Harry Reid likes prepubescent boys. And that he has had a long-term unnatural relationship with a goat. Think about that creepy little undertaker voice Harry has....it is totally believable.

You keep getting the story wrong ~ just less than half don't pay FEDERAL PERSONAL INCOME TAX.

It was designed intially to tax only 1 or 2% with high incomes. The fact it taxes 53% of folks means it has been an unmitigated failure.

Think of it as one of those federal programs we should get rid of.

Thinking you should expand the scope of this abomination is a serious problem and not at all Conservative in essence.

“A Vegas Blackjack dealer, whose identity I will not reveal, told me that Harry sleeps with sheep.”

According to a woman, on her death bed, who worked for Harry when he first started campaigning, he got his first big donations from the back of a car and the money came from Joe Conforti the original owner of the Mustang Ranch Brothel (you know, the one the IRS seized some years ago for a tax problem and tried to run it, but went under). Now isn’t that just like the government. A bunch of whores who can’t even run a whorehouse.

Unless there any publicly-accessible records of liens, levies, assessments or other actions by the IRS, this is all BS.

Not that I care. I am voting for neither Obama nor Romney in the upcoming election.

Them and their minions can continue to fight it out up to and beyond election day and it will not matter to me.

A food preparer at the Luxor, whom I will not name, told me Harry is an active member of NAMBLA.

I expect Valerie to leak Romney’s “enhanced” tax returns for an October surprise.

I do too. It's entirely in keeping with Obama/Axelrod/Jarrett practice from Obama's IL campaigns. Romney should expect it and be ready with a counterpunch.

Liberals are famous for having their imaginary friends, and few more so than Reid. Recall the fabricated kid from Lighthouse, NV, who wanted to grow up to be another Reid. Maybe he just meant he wanted to be so corrupt that he’d get rich without actually doing anything.
