It’s pitiful. Pitiable? (Hmm, what’s the difference, anyway? Something to look up — once again. Maybe it’ll stick this time!)

To think about an entire team of innocent young kids flushed down the drain like that... Who knows how many of them will survive it? For losing a damn soccer game.

piteous is generally not used when speaking of people, pitiable means 'able to be pitied,' and pitiful most often means 'insignificant; below contempt'
