My child attends a school that has been feeding the students this way and she is always ravenous when I pick her up. We always have to go to Panera or Noodles because the food at her school is unappetizing and there is not enough stuff for kids her age. The food is perfect for some flaky new ager however. Now I know some of the more cruel of you parents might say things like “Kids will eat whatever is put before them and they should be grateful and they better like it” and so on and so forth, but this is not a concentration camp. Kids in abusive homes will eat out of the trash cans of others, but that does not make it right or good. I pay good money for her education and I expect them to be offered appealing and delightful and filling and nutritious food she enjoys. Even our pediatrician says chocolate milk, pudding for girls to get calcium is fine. Red meat for iron. They need some oils and fats for healthy skin and hair as well as brain development. BTW, she does not have an ounce of fat on her and plays sports
That’s just it though, kids need more carbs and proteins because they are (supposed to be) playing off the calories.
If you ask me, the stupid government should stop focusing on FOOD and start focusing on EXERCISE.
They complain about kids not ‘moving’ and yet they take out recess, make physical education about running laps instead of games that they might get hurt in (don’t you dare play dodgeball or red rover!) etc...
70 years ago, folks ate several eggs, bacon, biscuits and potatoes or grits for breakfast but it was ok because they worked it off through the day.
My daughter is a dancer. In high school she was dancing 30 hours a week or so. This child could stop at Chipotle on the way home from dance, eat her burrito on the way home, then walk in the door and ask what was for dinner. And the biggest problem with her weight? Trying to find size zeros. Active kids can eat an amount that astounds adults (and leave us wishing we had our younger metabolism back). Limiting calories for growing active kids borders on cruel. And I bet they don’t learn well in the afternoon when all they can think about is where they are going for more food when they leave
