New Romney ad slams Obama over HHS contraception mandate

This week, Barack Obama attempted to shift back to the “war on women” attack theme, adding Sandra Fluke to his campaign team and arguing that Mitt Romney would take America back to the 1950s on contraception. Team Romney was ready for this strategy. Today they have a new ad, “Be Not Afraid,” which accuses Obama of conducting a war on religion by forcing companies to fully fund and facilitate access to contraception — even faith-based organizations like religious schools, charities, and hospitals. The ad makes a play for Catholic voters with references to Pope John Paul II and Lech Walesa, leveraging Romney’s recent successful visit to Poland:

Be Not Afraid

National Journal notes the ad’s subtlety:

It does not explicitly say how the Affordable Care Act forces religious institutions to “go against their faith,” but cites a news article headlined “Obama Insurance Decision Declares War on Religion.” The article, from a February issue of the San Antonio Express News, is an opinion piece that criticizes the Obama administration’s efforts to require religiously-affiliated institutions to cover birth control.

“Romney believes that is wrong,” a voice-over says as the spot cuts to images of Romney giving a speech in Warsaw, Poland, this summer. Quoting former Pope John Paul II, he says “be not afraid.”

Text on the screen then reads “Endorsed by Lech Walesa,” the former President of Poland.

As I’ve noted on a number of occasions, no one has ever proposed making contraception more difficult to obtain. No one has even suggested cutting back Title X funding for the federal program which subsidizes and distributes contraception for the poor. Forcing employers to provide it for free even when it violates their religious practice is the actual issue, especially for religious organizations. It’s an unprecedented intrusion into religious expression to solve a huge non-problem.

I’d call this ad a good response, with great timing, to Obama’s attempt to reheat the “war on women” meme that flopped so badly in May.

I think romney is doing better than McCain did, but to do worse would be almost impossible.

I, and many others here I’m sure, think the Republicans are being too timid and feckless, and that a real conservative could wipe the floor with Obama in the election.

It seems as though the establisment is trying to be as timid, and “moderate,” as possible much of the time.

One of these two strategies is wrong. I suppose we will find out in November.

The problem I see is that the people on our side are too polite.

I know we were taught not to get down in the gutter just because someone else does—but desperate times call for desperate measures...............

The stealth in this ad is that it will play well with Hispanic or Latino voters who are predominantly Catholic. It may appear to be aimed toward Catholic voters in general but its impact could be greatest by appealing to the strong family values in the Hispanic community.

This is a brilliant ad: Philly & Pittsburgh PA, Cleveland & Toledo Ohio, and Milwaukee, Wis all have a significant number of Polish Americans.

Just get it done with. On every negative Obama ad, splash a swaztika across the screen and force the Obama campaign to defend it.

When they call the Romney campaign on it, the Romney spokesman should come out, look the reporter in the eye and say, “You approved of an Obama add accusing Romney of killing women. It is because of you, the MSM that has created this.”

Then Romney should come out and declare we need to speak only of the candidates records and have more civility. Then force Obama to defend the economy.

We need to play offense. This defense crap doesn’t fly in politics.

I would go on every Sunday show and

Bingo. Everybody needs to pick up a copy of Rules for Radicals and read it. It will become obvious to you that we're in a groin-kicking eye-gouging back-stabbing street fight with the Chicago Mafia. No refs and no rules here.

Fight it to win it. We can all go to Confession Wednesday morning after the election.

The real conservative couldn’t even persuade supporters of other real conservative(s) in the Republican primaries. How would he/she wipe the floor with Obama in the general election?

“Be Not Afraid” is not just a quote from Pope John Paul II. It is also one of the most beloved Catholic hymns.

The last lines of the third verse are especially meaningful:

“And if wicked men insult and hate you all because of Me, blessed, blessed, are you.”
