A Georgia college student who cared for abandoned animals for nearly a decade was attacked and killed by a dog, police said.
Rebecca Carey, 23, was killed at her Decatur home sometime over the weekend, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports.
Authorities said Carey, who worked with dogs since she was a young teenager, had five dogs living with her at the time of her death. They included a pit bull, which she had owned for six years, a boxer mix and a Presa, a large Spanish breed. She was also dogsitting another Presa for a friend.
Careys body was discovered Sunday afternoon after she failed to show up for work at Alpharettas Loving Hands Animal Clinic. The dogs that she was caring for in her home were euthanized on Wednesday. It was unclear which dog killed Carey.
"Since the second grade when she read the book 'Throw Away Pets,' she vowed to be a voice for all animals," ... she volunteered countless hours with rescue networks and animal shelters. There she did what she loved the most: rescuing animals from untenable situations to find them safe, loving homes."
Sgt. Kim Medlin of DeKalb County Animal County said Careys death was the countys first fatal dog bite.
The cause of death was listed as neck and upper torso injuries consistent with dog bites, the website reports.
Neighbor Monica Cofer said the dogs had never shows any signs of aggression in the past.
They never showed any type of aggression, she told the website. Even if one got loose, you could tell them to go back to their yard and theyd go back.

Terrible shame, people who do rescue work are angels on earth. I’m afraid that brining in the new dog caused a real problem.

This is sad.

The problem is, any animal, including humans, can snap for unknown reasons. But with these breeds of dogs, if they do, and you don’t have a gun on your hip, someone may die or get horribly maimed.
Ooops, sorry, I will request this thread gets locked.
....thats what they all say
Did bringing in a new dog cause a fight for pack leadership? I wonder if the dogs became aggressive towards each other and she tried to separate them.
That would be my guess as well. The dogs tried to establish pecking order and she tried to stop it, maybe.
They didn’t show any aggression because Pit Bulls lie. They’ll wag their tails and pant like they want to give you a big sloppy doggy kiss. That is just a ruse to get you close so they can peel your face off.
Sad story.
But no matter how much you love your pet or other animals you must never forget that they are animals, not cute, fuzzy little people.
This one, from a video in NY just a couple of days ago, shows the dog wagging its tail.
The cop Trayvoned the dog, as one might say.

Poor kid - she was doing good work, trying to deal with problems created by irresponsible dog breeders and owners. The American Pit Bull, from what I read, was once a responsibly bred dog found in many American homes. Now I wouldn’t get near one without seeing a pedigree showing responsible breeding history for a dozen generations. The Presa Canario also seems to be the sort of breed popular with dog-fighters, drug gangs and others determined to bring out the worst in a a dog.
Nor should you ever forget that cute fuzzy people are animals.
Two pit bulls, two Presas. Sad but predictable outcome.
Response: A rather rough way to die.
Some dogs are just bred to fight and kill.
Bloodlines of such breeds are full of purposeful human selections for aggression and violence. The most aggressive pups in each litter were selected and mated for multiple generations.
They were also bred for deceptive characteristics to fool opponents. That is why so many people say such dogs “lie”. They won’t show any signs of aggression until they are threatened or think they can kill you.
These dogs were bred to be used as weapons and cage fighters, not family pets.
Had to have a finger re-attached doing that
