President Obama, Mitt Romney Agree: Gay Boy Scouts OK

President Obama and Mitt Romney have found some new common ground -surprisingly – on an issue of gay rights.

Obama today joined Romney in publicly disagreeing with a controversial ban on gay members of the Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation’s largest and most well-known youth development groups.

“The president believes the Boy Scouts is a valuable organization that has helped educate and build character in American boys for more than a century. He also opposes discrimination in all forms, and as such opposes this policy that discriminates on basis of sexual orientation,” said White House spokesman Shin Inouye in a statement to the Washington Blade, a LGBT newspaper.

It’s the first time Obama, who was named honorary president of the Boy Scouts of America in 2009, has publicly taken a position on the issue.

Romney first voiced support for gay scouts back in 1994 — a position that his campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said remains his position today.

“I feel that all people should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts, regardless of their sexual orientation,” Romney said in the video from 1994 recently re-surfaced by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He added at the time that he supports “the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue.”

Last month, the group affirmed its ban on openly gay scouts and leaders after a two-year review of the policy, prompting the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to call on Obama to “reconsider” his honorary post.

I am likely not voting for Romney because California is not in play. I disagree with him profoundly. What I have tried to do is wake people up who think there is no difference and it really doesn’t matter if Obama gets another four years to destroy this country. Standing on principles is noble, but be prepared for the consequences.

Some believe that Obama will be so destructive that it will be a redux of Reagan replacing Carter. Unfortunately, I believe that Obama’s policies will lead to economic collapse and martial law in this country. He will suspend the Constitution, the document for which he has utter disdain and which has not prevented him from doing whatever he wants to do.

If we elect enough conservatives with huevos, they will fight a President Romney; we will join in the fight. A fight against Obama is different. He has no rules. We have seen that. We have seen how his attorney general performs.

Vote for whom you wish out of principle. But if this nation collapses around us, as I fear it will, I do not want to hear from people who said there was no difference and it didn’t matter. I will tell those people to enjoy what was once America and STFU because their naivete was part of the problem.

If necessary, he will suspend the Constitution and declare martial law.

Then why the hell hasn't he done it already?

I am prepared to fight Romney tooth and nail over his very liberal and distasteful social positions. I would rather fight him in office than fight a Marxist who believes that the ends justify the means.

Romney's record exhibits another who believes that the ends justify the means.

I think you'd LOSE that tooth-and-nail fight with Romney, and I think you'd lose it spectacularly if Romney and his moderate allies were able to claim a "popular mandate" if he won on a landslide.

I don’t need your self-serving apologies or for you to feign past admiration. COWARD? I do not want to have a discussion with you again. Please do not ever let me see you at a FReep because I don’t wish to be in your company.

I will give the caveat again. Romney was at the bottom of my list ...

... and it's irrelevant, as it would BE irrelevant if Romney wins on a landslide.

Doug, I answered your question. Do the honorable thing and answer mine:

Now, I would really appreciate an honest answer to this question: If the Republican ticket was Ron Paul and John Boehner, would you want them to defeat Obama?

I gave you an honest, STRAIGHTFORWARD answer to your question as to whether I'd still want Romney to lose if the Dem ticket was Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright -- now how about an honest answer to my question above? Or are you still pouting? Or has your courage failed you?

So real, Doug has allowed his own hurt feelings to override holding up his end of the bargain (at least, assumed bargain) of answering MY question (see 158 and 168), fair, square, and straightforward, after I gave an honest and STRAIGHTFORWARD answer to his in post 139.

To top it off, this once-brave conservative Doug from Upland warns me I'd "better not show my face at a FReep" because he doesn't want to be in my company.

Doug says he probably won't be voting for Romney because he's in California, but urges folks in red or swing states to vote for a liberal he himself will decline.

And he doesn't want to be in MY company!

Which convinces me even more that you and I, so real, are on the right track and the right side. Truly, ABO is an affliction.

Since 1996, I’ve posted over 7,000 articles and made over 78,000 responses. I’ve met hundreds, maybe even thousands of FReeper friends at events. There are literally only a few with whom I would not want to share a beer. We can agree to disagree, and I’ve disagreed with many at times, but I am no longer going to reply directly to people who have become vile and contemptible in their responses. I choose not to play their game. They can enjoy their own mental masturbation and choose to attack me if they wish. Have fun.

We are all aware of those who helped form the belief system of the Marxist who currently leads this nation and who, in my opinion and many others opinions, genuinely loathes this country and wants to bring it to his knees. Those who created this monster are his father, Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers, and Jeremiah Wright. Quite a who’s who of those who hate America and want to end America.

I posed a question to those who think there is no difference between Romney and Obama. Since the early days of working on the campaign for the father of conservatism, Barry Goldwater, I have fought the conservative battle. Some believe I have given up the battle I have fought my entire life. They are simply wrong. They can spout off here as much as they want. They can call me names. They can become even more vile and contemptible. But they are still wrong. I will continue to oppose those policies of Romney with which I disagree. I did not want him as the candidate.

Here was the question I posed: If the RAT candidates were Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, would you still want Romney to lose?

I never thought I would see what I have seen. There are some who would rather have Ayers and Wright leading this nation than Romney. After that answer, there is nowhere to go in having a logical discussion. It is like doing battle with the out of touch DU and Kos group.

Those of us who recognize political reality know that we cannot always get our way no matter how hard we fight. I wanted Newt and Sarah. But they were not chosen. So we continue the fight.

Before the last few days, I thought that only those who hated Mormons would prefer that Ayers and Wright lead the nation if it stopped Romney. But I guess I was mistaken. For those who cannot see it or refuse to see it, Obama is Ayers and Wright. God save this republic. The America we have known will be gone if Barack Hussein Obama gets four more years to not only implement sweeping social and economic changes with the stroke of a pen, but makes foreign policy decisions that continue to weaken us. That is the dream from his father.

MO GOP senate candidate probably blows the race. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2920441/posts?page=1

There goes the plan to let Obama win and get 67 senators to convict in impeachment trial. Yeah, that was a workable plan that had a high level of probability.

“once brave conservative”?

Finny, you can’t hold a candle to doug from upland.

You have no idea of what doug did for the cause in the Clinton years, at personal risk to himself.

You need some Depends for that diarrhea of the keyboard you are experiencing.

As far as “ABO is an affliction”, Obama is a clear and present danger to America, and if you pass the only peaceful means of expulsion for him on Election Day in 80 days, it is indeed a foolish course of action loaded with unintended consequences for the country.

A second term for Obama will be considered a mandate, which will unleash the true face of the Communist Obama Administration.

In my opinion, that will make all of your diatribe irrelevant in the face of national, and personal, survival.

There exist things that are far more evil than a Romney Presidency.

Keep whipping up that hysteria, even if it requires you to write such utter fear-driven twaddle as "A second term for Obama will be considered a mandate," as if the MSM could just wave a wand and disappear all the manifest contempt and disgust that the majority of Americans have for Obama.

It's the only argument you have for convincing conservatives to vote for a stone-cold liberal as America's most powerful Republican and the highest office holder in the land -- indeed a foolish course of action loaded with unintended consequences for the country.

Had to call it a night last night, dfu, as duty called this morning. Your question about Ayers and Wright was the equivalent of asking "if the backup cook is so evil as to urinate in the gravy, would you still want the lead cook fired for spitting in it?" That's the kind of question a manager would ask who's too timid to do the firing. Yes, it's a cowardly question, and I'll stand by that. But, for the record, I did not call you a coward; in fact, I offered you "all due respect". As it was your question, you may not have analyzed it from a third person perspective and seen how ridiculous it is. I answered honestly and courageously : to wit, I want both cooks out on their ears and nothing less is good enough because neither one is worthy of representing the restaurant. I wouldn't lift a finger to save either of their jobs, and would in fact do everything I can to have them both sacked. In the case of this election, that means to me voting third party. I have no doubt if Romney gets elected you'll work against his liberal agenda to the best of your ability. We all will. But the point of an election is not to install a man to represent you that you have to work against. I've done the fact checking and found Virgil Goode represents me reasonably well. He's an easy choice for me and Romney can't hold a candle to him. Will he win in 2012? No. But then John Fremont did not win in 1856 either, but look what he started. At some point we have to take a leap of faith.

I appreciate the hat tip, Finny, but to be clear I think the 'question' dfu raised was cowardly. I do not deign to put that label on him personally. He did not indicate he would not fight. I just think the way he's chosen to fight allows the republican party platform to become too uncomfortably similar to the democrat party platform for my taste.

Glad to accept. Thanks. We will have that beer as we fight President Romney (yuk) every single frigging time he does or says something from the left side to drive us crazy.

I have to give Romney credit for this — he is actually willing to fight these leftist Alinskyite bastards, unlike McCain, who simply rolled over and tried to be nice.

Since the Goldwater years as a teenager, I have often been disappointed that my guy was not the nominee. For the first time ever, I was not glued to both the TV and radio (and computer since Algore invented the Internet) on election night in November 2008. I knew the outcome and could not stand to watch. Instead, I was at the indoor gun range trying a sweet little Springfield XD-9 that became my Christmas present that year. To this day, I do not know what states the Marxist carried or the electoral count.

As my parents worried in WW II, I worried about the future of America during the Cold War. Thanks to the Gipper, Maggie Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II, we destroyed the greatest evil of the 20th Century.

Our nation is at a tipping point where the people on the dole are about to outnumber those who work (if that hasn’t already actually happened). Those people are never going to give up their benefits. In four years, I believe Obama really will add another 5 million illegals as voters without any approval of Congress. Maybe another 5 million on food stamps. And with very good reason, I am afraid he is going to collapse ours and the world’s economy, either through the ineptness he has demonstrated or on purpose as many of us suspect. Can Romney/Ryan stop it? I do not know. But at least I know that they grew up in America and love this country. They believe in private enterprise.

As I have said, in California I have the luxury of voting for a real conservative because it will not matter. If any of you want to join me, write in Doug from Upland. LOL But in a swing state, I would have no choice but to vote for Romney/Ryan. Thank goodness Paul Ryan was added to the ticket.

We have never faced something in this country like Barack Hussein Obama, who has surrounded himself with dedicated leftists for whom rules do not apply. The Constitution and rule of law do not matter to them. That is the political equivalent to the asymmetrical warfare we have faced in the Middle East.

In my mind, those who say there is no difference between Romney and Obama are simply wrong in their analysis. It is not just another election this time.
