Hallelujah! It was a dark day when I turned my last M1911 into the armory for the final time and the armored handed me that lousy Beretta. I Never really got over it. Great to see the Corps returned to what works best!

Good article, with excellent history of the the "new" pistol's M1911 roots. One criticism for the author: it was the Spanish-American War, not the "Philippine-American War."

I have always heard it called the Philippines Insurrection.

It was not the Spanish American war tho it did evolve from our getting the Philippines in that war.

Actually it was the "Phillipine Insurection". The Spanish American war was already over, and Spain had ceded the Phillipines to us. We were fighting Moro (Muslim) rebels.

Exactly!! That line annoyed me no end! Filipinos are our friends. We libertated them (and the Cubans and Puerto Ricans) in that war. We liberated them again in 1945

A warm salute to our Filipino friends on this board! Thank you for your warm friendship towards these United States

it was the Spanish-American War, not the “Philippine-American War.” .......................................... Uh? Then why didn’t they call it the model 98’ colt automatic?

Love it, we are going to use the same weapon that great, great, great, grampa used against Poncho Villa. Hey if it works, don’t try and fix it. Just rig it for an extended magazine.

Correction it was the Philippine Insurrection were the regulars were equipped with .38 caliber revolvers, but the Phillipine constabulary were issued .45 Colt Peacemakers. These ( the .45 revolvers) were considered obsolete by the Army .

It was in fighting with the guerrillas that the Army realized that against a fanatic enemy at close quarters the .38 revolver cartridge ( NOT the .38 Special) just didn’t cut it.
The “War Department “ then came out with a “request for an improved sidearm”. The Browning design was an improvement on an earlier Browning pistol in the same cartridge.
Just thought you would like to know. 8*)
