SUNBURY Valley conservatives are looking forward to watching a documentary movie examining the Obama presidency, but theyll have to hurry.
The film, 2016: Obamas America, opens today for a short run at the Susquehanna Valley Malls Digiplex Cinema Center in Hummels Wharf. It also is being shown in Bloomsburg and State College.
Bucknell Universitys Conservatives Club tentatively plans to host a speech in October by Dinesh DSouza, the author-director behind the film, but the universitys Campus Theatre has no plans to show it.
Although we do screen documentaries at the Campus, we tend to shy away from political documentaries that take one point of view, theater executive director Ellen Flacker-Darer said.
DSouzas documentary does that. Based on his book, Obamas America, the film advances the theory that President Obama pursues his fathers left-leaning, anti-colonial ideals. The movie had a limited opening release in July, and according to several reviewers, Obamas alleged anti-colonialism is not presented in a warm and fuzzy way, but as flaws consistent with the senior Obamas multiple relationships, alcoholism and fatal auto accident in 1982.
The film also explores the presidents relationship with his incendiary former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and alleges that Obama has tried hard to keep that relationship under wraps, as it would destroy the good guy image he has diligently cultivated.
If the Bucknell Conservatives Club makes a request to screen the movie and they havent so far, Darer said Id bring it to my board of directors for their consideration.
Another alternative for conservatives, Darer said, would be to rent the theater for a private screening.
She said that when any movie is available for screenings, Ill read reviews from various sources. We generally dont do first-run movies, so that gives us time to really see how a movie is received, whether its well done, what the critics say. And the reviews I read about 2016: Obamas America rated it as a mediocre documentary. Its just not a movie weve put on our schedule.
But A. Dale Bud Mayo, chairman and CEO of Digiplex Destinations, which owns a chain of multiplex theaters, including the one at the Susquehanna Valley Mall, has no qualms about running the flick in his theaters.
First, I want to say to everyone that we are apolitical, he said. I know the movie is controversial, but it has gotten some good reviews, and we want to be able to present movies with a strong point of view, either way, for the public to view and then decide. Its not our job to edit what we allow people to see. We like different points of view.
Makes the University owned theater manager look like a fool.
apolitical...............hmmpf
This excellent film which is both truthful and factual should be seen by every single American voter in the USA!!! Hope it has a great viewing audience this weekend across the country!!!
Although we do screen documentaries at the Campus, we tend to shy away from political documentaries that take one point of view, theater executive director Ellen Flacker-Darer said.
Ellen Flecker-Darer also said, "Now it was a film about the inside job of 9/11 showing that Bush knew, we would be showing that for the next 6 years. But please, since it is about the LIBERAL/MARXIST C-I-C, we won't be showing it."
In my best jack Nicholson: "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
(I wonder if they show any of Michael Moore's "non-political" docs...)
With a little checking, the film’s budget was (allegedly) $2.5m, and according to Box Office Mojo it has made $2.6m, starting from a single theater opening on a very steep upward curve.
We saw film this afternoon. D’Souza presents his thesis in scholarly, logical, fascinating fashion. Coherent. Good photography. Audience absolutely silent throughout the presentation.
