As the Legislature adjourned for three months last Friday, the Capitol turned its attention to the Nov. 6 election, and particularly three or perhaps four state Senate contests whose outcomes could affect the balance of legislative power.
Democrats now hold 25 of the Senate's 40 seats. If they were to gain two more this year, they would have a two-thirds supermajority and could pass certain kinds of legislation, such as tax increases, without Republican votes.
That power would increase pressure on Republicans in the Assembly, who, it's assumed, will continue to hold more than a third of its seats and therefore could, if they hang together, block tax increases.
Such solidarity, however, is not guaranteed. This year, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez was able to peel off enough Republicans to win Assembly approval of his measure that would raise taxes on some multistate corporations by more than $1 billion a year.

I was born and raised in SoCal.
Many other states are NOT in the shape of CA.
I know quite a bit about CA.
I have blood relatives still living in SoCal. I've advised them to move out. Most won't..for various reasons.
I'm not a Rhodes Scholar....LOL!!
“I was born and raised in SoCal. have blood relatives still living in SoCal. I’ve advised them to move out. Most won’t..for various reasons.”
So you would rather cut and run than stay and fight, is that it? In the fight to save this country some people stand and fight and others who don’t have the requisite fortitude, move away. Sure glad that the men and women who founded this country felt like standing and fighting. Thank goodness your relatives have decided to stay. And no, you still don’t know much about California, a lot of us still love this state and will do our best to rescue it from the RATS.
I moved in 1997....
Wanted to see real blue skies again...and the Milky Way.
Wanted to shoot guns, hunt turkey and deer without being under a microscope.
Wanted a state that actually appeared to be reasonable, and sane.
Many people move...You have to ask yourself. Is this the hill you want to die on?
Some of my "relatives" aren't blood...and they are hardcore liberals. They are getting what they support. I wish them luck.
Weak Republicans in the assembly need to be primaried out. There can be no apostates tolerated. This top-two crap helps RINOs.
