When all else fails, Democrats use the passive tense.
She broke the law. Is that a "personal issue"? Did a personal issue make her break the law? Did her law-breaking make her resignation a hard decision? Apparently, it was harder than deciding to break the law. Karma's a byotch.
And harder still would be a properly worded statement, such as, "I humbly apologize to the American people for breaking the law. It was a shameful act for which I take full responsibility, and which I do and will regret for years to come. Our nation's system of the Rule of Law requires each of us to stand up for the truth in our actions, especially in voting. I did wrong; and as a consequence it is only fair that I step down as your candidate.
