Two or three of them were killed. There were probably not a lot of them on duty at the time.
If I recall correctly the Marines are facility guards whereas VIPs are provided a Personal Security Detail (PSD) which is usually comprised of contractors, local or otherwise, on contract to the State Dept.
They cannot refuse to allow us to bring in anything via diplomatic pouch. I am quite certain that we could bring in a bunch of equipment - in pieces, if necessary - via such a method. Once inside the embassy grounds, we're on American territory, and OUR law governs.

I'd have every embassy in any country that could remotely be considered hostile armed with several belt-fed .50s, along with at least 10,000 rounds of ammo per. Breech the gates, and standing orders would be to give the offenders a heavy dose of F U, courtesy of John Moses Browning. Host governments don't like it, then we pack up and leave, but not before air-mailing them a parting gift. It is THEIR job to stop violent protests from getting to the gates, but OUR job to protect AMERICAN territory.
Why are there no dead muzzys? I would think if the Marines were there then some enemy should be dead right now.
