Reports are that the Marines stayed behind in the consulate as a last stand to give time for the others to escape...

Marines as heroes. This is not hard to believe. But what about the reports that since this was a consulate there were no marines? Were they just escorting an American diplomatic visitor?

Yes, they go where the ambassador goes. There may be some confusion here. Our Libyan embassy wasn’t attacked, it’s in Tripoli, the capitol of Libya. That’s where the ambassador is stationed.

This attack was in a consular office of which there are many in every country. They are lightly protected as they offer visas and trade assistance and are mainly staffed by locals.
