President Barack Obama didn't intend to signal any change in the U.S.-Egypt relationship last night when he said Egypt is not an "ally," the White House told The Cable today.
In an interview with Telemundo Wednesday night, Obama said that the U.S. relationship with the new Egyptian government was a "work in progress," and emphasized that the United States is counting on the government of Egypt to better protect the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, which was attacked by protesters on Sept. 11.
"I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy," Obama said. "They're a new government that is trying to find its way. They were democratically elected. I think that we are going to have to see how they respond to this incident."
That comment had Egypt watchers scratching their heads, especially since technically, Egypt was designated as a Major Non-NATO Ally in 1989 when Congress first passed the law creating that status, which gives them special privileges in cooperating with the United States, especially in the security and technology areanas.

Yikes! Darn tablet!
He's frantically reacting to this nightmare of his own creation, but his bungling attempts to distance himself from the mess he's made are simply magnifying his utter incompetence.
And the democrats have Romney checked.
If he says anything about this mess the democrat media will crucify him for trying to take political advantage and not standing shoulder to shoulder with the President.
With all the geniuses in the party at his disposal he should be able to break the check. Otherwise he should give up now and retreat to La Jolla.
You can say that again!
LLS
I can just picture him saying that and Chris Matthews getting ANOTHER tingle up his leg.
Thanks and be my guest. I’ve posted so much stuff on FB but seem to get no where changing the hearts and small minds of liberals. They can never argue the facts. All they do is name call and post mean responses.
If the press asks Romney anything about this, Romney can say he’s waiting for the president to let us know what our current US policy is before he comments. The current White House has no policy. None.
Empty chair.
I copied some of those mumbling, bumbling lines almost word for word directly off some Obama videos.
Governor Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later. And as president one of the things I have learned is that you cant do that. You have to make sure that statements you make are backed up by facts and that you have to think through the ramification before you make them.
Talking about Romney:
“As president,” Obama added, “one of the things I’ve learned is you can’t do that. That it’s important for you to make sure that the statements you make are backed up by the facts.”
STFU fecist.
0bungles has no freaking idea what he’s saying. He’s like Algore, says whatever crap pops into his head.
Sophistication is:
I feel like I just described Jethro Bodine from an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies. Sophisticated!
Obama: '10,000 People Died' in Kansas TornadoRICHMOND, Va. Barack Obama, caught up in the fervor of a campaign speech Tuesday, drastically overstated the Kansas tornadoes death toll, saying 10,000 had died.
The death toll was 12.
"In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died an entire town destroyed," the Democratic presidential candidate said in a speech to 500 people packed into a sweltering Richmond art studio for a fundraiser.
It's called "not lying".
Most people learn that soon after they are out of diapers.
Obama didn't learn it until he was 47 and elected to the presidency?
Actually, he might have learned he is not supposed to lie, but he still does it regularly anyway.
Joe Biden is wearing the BarackObama Suit, apparantly, and passing for Barack, because it is a blunder-a-minute over there.
Its GREAT!!!
Too many people apply the term "narcissist" to obama. He never got past fecist.
Obama off the prompter again, co-president Jarrett not there to tell him what to say?
Some doors are better left unopened.
This could be one.
