Emory University will eliminate several academic departments and make other changes in the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean Robin Forman said Friday.
The college has been discussing the changes for the past four years as it works to enhance core strengths and expand into developing academic areas, Forman said.
Finances didnt drive the changes, he said, noting Emory is projected to end the fiscal year without a deficit.
Emory will phase out the journalism program, department of visual arts, division of educational studies and department of physical education. Students enrolled in these programs will be able to complete their degrees and tenured faculty will move to other departments.
The university will suspend admissions to Spanish and economics graduate programs so leaders there can redefine the missions, Forman said. Emory also will suspend admissions to the Institute for Liberal Arts so it can be restructured.
The changes will begin at the end of this academic year and finish by the end of the 2016-17 academic year. About 20 staff positions will be cut over the next five years, officials said.
Savings from the changes will be re-invested into existing programs and growing areas, such as neurosciences, contemporary China studies and digital and new media studies, Emory officials said.
Leaders of affected departments sent letters and emails to students.

Good one Martin.
:)
Love it, Martin.
I attended a church for several years where the pastor made a big deal about everyone being in church Sunday night. For shame if one didn’t attend. One day, I over heard him talking about the cost of the heating bill to heat the church all day Sunday. Suddenly, Sunday night became “family night” to spend at home with one’s family, and for shame if one didn’t. Yeah, I’m sure money had nothing to do with it./ sarc
The reality of these degrees is kicking in. The emperor has no clothes.
Q: How can an engineer get an artist off his fron porch?
A; Pay him for the pizza!
bada-bump!
Yet there is no mention of suspending any programs that end in “...Studies” -— hmmmm, wonder why? /s
I guess they've been looking around and realizing that no one's getting a job with a degree like that and The college probably doesn't want to prop it up anymore......blast that evil Capitolism!!!!
http://college.emory.edu/home/academic/program/concentrations.html this is the undergraduate majors and minors ~ and no, they aren’t eliminating ‘studies’, but they also didn’t have an art program ~ not a real one anyway ~ with painting, drawing, printing, digital art, animation, sculpture, etc. They had only an art history operation combined with women’s studies ~ and a number of other bits and dabs here and there. They are getting rid of that. They are not, however an art school and never were. But it gets worse, if they want students to know about art they bring in a lecturer and he demonstrates these things for them ~ nothing about any hands on experience!
i believe women’s studies is being kept but physical education isn’t. life is simply too difficult for their students so nothing difficult ~ hmm ~ on the other hand they claim to be a great research university.
But they're adding new "studies" - China studies and digital and new media studies.
Is that relevant? Do you know what the study of art entails these days? Do you imagine all engineers have 8 thumbs and two widdle ones to hold dainty cups? Have you tried casting bronze or stainless steel sculpture or carving marble? Do you have any idea what certain paints can do to your skin? Can you produce a movie?
‘digital’ is being added by everybody everywhere. Even doctors have to know how to type these days, and if you want in on the lucrative DaVinci racket, you’d best know an awful lot about digital!
They should keep the Phys Ed department..... Have never understood Journalism Schools - if you want to do journalism, start writing!
GRADUATES
The graduate with a Science degree asks, “Why does it work?”
The graduate with an Engineering degree asks, “How does it work?”
The graduate with an Accounting degree asks, “How much will it cost?”
And the graduate with an Arts degree asks, “Do you want fries with that?”
BWAHAhahahaha!!!!!!
Just had a family member visit with her boyfriend.... Both graduated with a BA degree in anthropology this summer...
In all seriousness I asked them what type of jobs their degrees can get them in today’s ecomonic environment ?
Their answer was: governments always want to pay people to study their cultures....
Yes... I about bite my lip in half trying not to laugh and be rude....
