I remember waiting at the newsstands for the midnite edition of the New York Daily News - everyone would flip to the sports section to see the total mutuel handle from the racetrack.

The last three digits were the “pick 3” of the numbers racket.

Back when it was illegal before it was legalized via state lotteries.

GASP!.. The numbers were a staple in every corner tavern, and pool hall.. I remember some poor folks were struggling with a quarter-a-day habit..

However, at least in Chicago, the daily numbers were the last 3 of the National Treasury Report, I could be wrong because I would never do anything like illegal betting.. (eyes rolling).. LOL
