72% of Canadians support suspension of diplomatic relations with Iran

Canadians overwhelmingly support the government’s decision to suspend diplomatic relations with Iran, according to a public opinion survey released on Wednesday by pollster Angus Reid.

Although several former ambassadors and foreign affairs analysts have questioned the decision, the poll found that 72% of Canadians agreed with it, regardless of which federal political party they backed.

Only 16% were opposed.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced on Sept. 7 he had severed all ties with Iran over a “long list of reasons.” He closed Canada’s embassy in Tehran and gave Iranian diplomats five days to leave Ottawa.

Mr. Baird cited Iran’s military support for the Syrian regime, the “military dimensions” of its nuclear program, threats against Israel, “racist anti-Semitic rhetoric,” “incitement to genocide,” and “appalling” human rights record.

It was a wise and reasoned move for several reasons,not least of which is that it's distinctly possible,if not likely,that things are gonna get real ugly there in the not-too-distant future.

If the Abamanation suspends presidential elections in 2012 or 2016, or the country descends into a socialist dictatorship, I will look into the feasibility of moving to Canada. I don’t know what their laws on immigration are. I do know that quite a few draft dodgers when there during the Vietnam war.

For Americans it's actually pretty easy, especially if you own a business or are an accredited professional. Info can by had from any Canadian Consulate.

Our immigration record isn’t that great, but the Gov’t seems to be tightening the noose lately. Canadians are getting sick of letting in questionable people who take advantage of our good will, and who would crap all over us the first chance they get. We’re not here to subsidize these users with our hard earned tax dollars.

That said, I hope our doors are always open to decent hard working Americans. Draft dodgers/AWOL Military people can get stuffed, however. This is just my opinion of course.

My sister is one of those who is contemplating moving to Canada if the Obamanation is re-elected and her, and my, worst fears are realized. She is 72, a retired teacher, $300,000 in net worth, in good health, and with a pension (not Social Security) that meets her needs (the application did not request her income). We have two cousins in Winnipeg. She applied on the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship web site and learned she would not be allowed to emigrate because she did not have business experience. Would that USA immigration requirements were as strict.
