Romney 2011 taxes: Mitt Gives More To Charity Than Obama, Biden (and this from Politico!)
Politico ^ | 9/21/2012 | Josh Gerstein

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was far more generous to charities than President Barack Obama or Vice President Joe Biden last year, both in dollar terms and as a percentage of income, tax return data Romney’s campaign released Friday indicate.

Romney and his wife, Ann, gave 29.4 percent of their income to charity in 2011, donating $4,020,772 out of the $13,696,951 they took in.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama gave 21.8 percent of their income to charitable organizations last year, donating $172,130 out of the $789,674 they made.

Biden and his wife, Jill, gave 1.5 percent of their income away in 2011, with charitable donations totaling $5,540 out of $379,035.

Republicans have mocked Obama and especially Biden for being unusually tight-fisted when it comes to making charitable gifts.

When the Obama campaign released past tax returns for Biden in 2008, it was revealed that the Bidens donated just $3,690 to charity over 10 years — an average of $369 a year.

"Obama and first lady Michelle Obama gave 21.8 percent of their income to charitable organizations..."

I can't believe that.

The Kenyan must go.

I think that what gets lost in all this Romney talk (you know, he’s a Mormon, or he’s a RINO, or whatever) is that Mitt Romney is a GOOD man. Remember the old saying, America is a great country because it is a good country. We could do worse than Mitt Romney. A hell of a lot worse.

I wish they would check the returns for Obama prior to 2007 when he started his campaign. Character is not revealed by what you do when the world is watching... it is revealed by what you do when nobody cares. I seem to remember his the giving by he and Michelle was pathetic to put it mildly. Same with Biden.

Cable News Commentator: Goldie Taylor “Well. Now, we know Mitt will do anything to win— including pay more taxes than he owes. Who does that?”

I wonder how much Harry Reid paid in taxes and charitable contributions.

Why should they donate? They’ll just pass another law confiscating more of Romney’s money to give to the poor.

Mormons are expected to tithe, especially wealthy Mormons (which is what makes the Mormon church so wealthy), and I would imagine that most of the 14% of his income given in charity is his Mormon 10%. Church giving counts as a charitable donation.

There’s nothing wrong with this, but it’s simply that this is what he is expected to do or probably even has to do to remain a Mormon in good standing. The 4% over that, considering his income, would have been a nice gift to other charities though!

The real question is to which charities. Some supposed charities such as media matters etc a tax deductible.

People list their charitable giving, just to get a break on income taxes?

Charity given wholeheartedly and anonymously is still charity, though it is not recorded in any books kept by men.

The Lord knows, and great store is put up in Heaven.

Sure, right, this is what Joe and Jill Biden do....

Wish you hadn't brought that up because that opens the door a little bity crack to ask this big ol' question ~ of that charitable giving, with all of these guys if you want, how much of it went to the LDS church and/or its agencies as a TITHE?

Why I ask is because an old friend of mine (who is today considered a good Mormon) had it explained to him that the tithe was like an insurance policy, and if you kept up on it and paid it, and something happened, you'd get it all back ~ and you could even borrow money to do that.

Sounded like a deal, but doesn't that make tithes something different than "charity"? ~ at least when the donation is to the LDS?

With a cult member it makes sense to know what portion of “charity” is money sent to the cult, and anything affiliated with the cult.

I would expect the same of Tom Cruise or a Hare Krishna, before I called their money sent to the mother organization, simply “charity”.

Mitt is REQUIRED by Mormon law to give millions to them, or else he will never become a God, and will lose the right to enter the Temples.

I doubt the Biden's are storing anything up in Heaven ~ more likely his appearance at a church fund raiser in future years (when he's out of office) will meet all the requirements needed for any potential indulgence.

Which means he will get his name carved on one of those heavy donor marble pieces down in the church basement ~ but that is so customary as to suggest it probably didn't even need to be mentioned.

One could ask the same question of donations to Catholic charities.
