Intrigue Surrounds a New Iranian American PAC

New York Sun, The (NY) - Monday, July 21, 2003

Author: ADAM DAIFALLAH Staff Reporter of the Sun

WASHINGTON - Senators Schumer, Kennedy, Carper, and two congressmen are listed as guests attending the kickoff of a new Iranian-American political action committee here tomorrow.

The Iranian American Political Action Committee is being established “to raise funds from the Iranian American community to support candidates for political office who have shown a commitment to our community’s domestic concerns and issues,” according to the group’s Web site.

The Iranian American PAC is led by Hassan Nemazee , a wealthy Iranian-American who has served on the board of the American Iranian Council, a group that advocates resuming ties between Iran and America.

Mr. Nemazee was nominated by President Clinton as ambassador to Argentina but withdrew before getting a confirmation vote in the Senate.

The PAC’s Web site says that Messrs. Kennedy, Schumer, and Carper, Rep. Steny Hoyer, a Democrat of Maryland, and Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican of California, will be featured guests at a cocktail reception here tomorrow night at the Phoenix Park Hotel.

But a spokesman for Mr. Issa, Frederick Hill, said the event is “not on his schedule and never was on his schedule.” A spokesman from Mr. Carper’s office said that the event was on his schedule but that he wasn’t sure if he’d be attending. Calls to spokesmen for Mr. Kennedy on Friday and Mr. Schumer yesterday were not returned.

Britain’s Prince Harry talks with Dr. Jill Biden, left, and British Ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott, second from right, and his wife Susie Nemazee, right, during a reception at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, Monday, May 7, 2012, to meet members of the British and American teams who are taking part in the Warrior Games. The Warrior Games is an event hosted every year by the US Olympic Committee.

Another key Biden contributor is Hassan Nemazee, a New York money-manager who chaired Hillary Clinton’s finance committee, personally raising over $500,000 for her campaign. Nemazee also has served on the board of the American-Iranian Council, and more recently set up the Iranian-American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) along with a group of Silicon Valley billionaires, many of whom have close ties to the Iranian regime. Because of the controversy Nemazee and IAPAC members have generated within the Iranian-American community, the PAC’s Web site includes a bald disclaimer of any ties to Tehran. “IAPAC has no relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran . . . and is not focused on U.S. policy towards Iran, establishing ties with or legitimizing the government of Iran,” it says. Obama’s choice of Joe Biden as his running mate “highlights the need to really investigate the web of Iranian influence in the United States,” Iranian-American political analyst Hassan Daioleslam told Newsmax. “What you have here is a group of people who have been working together through different groups and organizations for the past ten years” to promote the interests of the Iranian regime. “It’s deeply troubling to have a vice-presidential candidate raise funds from people whose ties to the Iranian regime raise such serious questions,” Daioleslam said.
