Washington, D.C.- Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced a $9,711,497 grant for the Washoe County School District to support teachers and improve instruction in math and science. The grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF). Today, the Department of Education awarded a total of $250 million to nearly 1,000 schools nationwide to support TIF-related efforts.

“Nevada schools need effective teachers to help our students succeed,” said Reid. “In particular, math and science skills are becoming increasingly important for students. I am pleased that this grant will enable Washoe County School District to invest in math and science teachers who help improve the lives of their students and colleagues.”

About the Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF)
The TIF program supports efforts to develop and implement performance-based teacher and principal compensation systems in high-need schools. The fund helps to reform compensation systems in school districts nationwide to reward teachers and principals based on student achievement, and it also helps to increase the number of teachers working in disadvantaged communities.

Such a piece of pork does make for a grand gesture, looks good to the locals, and is highly visible. How much of trhe grant actually goes to provide for improvement in stimulating young skulls full of mush to become enamored of the “hard sciences” and math remains much in question, but with this “free money” to eke out the meagre resources of the local school authority, it makes it much easier to tie in other “suggestions” for modification of the curriculum.

The only way kids learn math and science better...

is for the teacher to have majored in either math or science.

This $10 million grant is probably for “workshops” and “enrichment”
for teachers.

HIRE A MATH MAJOR, PROBLEM SOLVED.

BREAK THE UNION. BREAK THE OUTDATED TEACHER CERTIFICATION.

LET UNEMPLOYED ENGINEERS TEACH MATH AND SCIENCE.

Money needed:% 0

Fed taxpayer money: 0

You wonder how an idiot like Harry Reid stays in the Senate??

You are looking at the answer.

His seniority entitles him to a big slice of the vote buying money.
