When I saw the news story about Ryan outfitting his 10-year-old girl for hunting, I thought it might have some positive impact in Pennsylvania. Around 2000, I was considering a transfer to a G.E. office in Pennsylvania. I saw the company’s holiday schedule, and the first day of hunting season was a holiday — for the state, I believe; not G.E. They’re serious about the Second Amendment, and about hunting.

It’s not a state holiday, but it is for many companies, especially those in manufacturing. So it’s one good thing that comes from having a unionized workforce.

Schools in my area of Pa. are closed opening day of deer. It’s been that way since I was a kid in school. Back then none of the teachers and half of the students didn’t show up for school so they made it part of Thanksgiving vacation. I can remember during deer season the talk in homeroom every morning was what did you see, where did you see it and did you get a shot.

Oh yeah! First day of hunting season, the schools are always closed! I never heard of businesses closing, at least not around here - and we have the highest deer population in the state - so I been told anyway!
