President Reagan and Mr. Mondale participated in a televised debate. The candidates stood at separate podia on a stage to respond to questions from a panel of journalists on issues in the 1984 election, including balancing the federal budget and foreign policy issues.
First question to each by Wieghart on failure of Reagan-Bush and Carter-Mondale admins to balance budget. (Back then kiddies, deficits were only measured in billions.)
Fred Barnes asking Reagan about religious beliefs and his not going to church.
Love how Reagan delivers his quips with a twinkle in his eye.
Mondull was...so dull :)
Thanks kristinn!
Reagan Ping!
Reagan won a 49 state landslide without talk radio, the Internet or the Tea Party. Wonder how he did it?
This brought forth the cry of "Let Reagan be Reagan."
Reagan went on to win the next debate and reelection with the quip about not holding Mondale's 'youth and inexperience' against him.
We’re watching how “he did it”... love his command of the issues...especially his answer on the abortion question. Answered beautifully. An unborn child, as a living being, is protected under our Constitution.
Mondale: “Vice President Bush pays a lower tax rate than the janitor who cleans his office.”
There’s nothing new under the sun.
This is not the first reference to Reagan’s famous winning line...”there you go again”.
The media has been ‘blurbing’ that same quote. It seems to me they are trying to get Romney to, FOOLISHLY, refer to it in one of the debates.
After all, Obama is ripe to receive that line because he will be repeating all the same crap he did in 2008 and it would be a huge mistake if Romney even comes close to that Reagan quote.
When obama starts to repeat the same old dribble he made in 2008 OR 2010, and he will, Romney could use an effective response ie: “Mr. President, there is a famous quote by Yogi Berra...”It’s deju vu all over again”, we’ve all heard your broken promises years ago”
OR: “Mr President, you have asked the American public to patiently wait for your policies to work, we have waited for four long years, just how long do you expect us to wait...and for what”
Thank you both very much.
A ‘Rat never changes his stripes...or something like that.
You’re welcome!
C-SPAN has a wonderful library. Very happy the channel chose to play this one tonight and that you alerted us.
