New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie predicts presidential race will be “turned upside down” after first debate

Francesca Chambers

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said Sunday on Face the Nation that he thinks the presidential race will be “turned upside down” on Thursday morning after GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama debate each other for the first time on Wednesday evening in the first 2012 general election debate.

Christie admitted Romney has had “a tough couple of weeks,” but said, ”the great news for Republicans” is that Romney is a wonderful debater and will do “extraordinarily well.” Christie said Romney’s biggest advantage Wednesday is that Americans will have the opportunity to see what he and Obama truly believe without the spin of the mainstream media.

“I think it is a whole different deal. What he’s going to be doing on Wednesday night is not going to be filtered by anybody,” Christie said. “It’s not going to be spun by anybody or filtered by anybody. The American people are gonna to get 90 minutes to look these two men right in their eye in the their living rooms and make a judgment about their visions for the future, their experience and their records and be able to say, ‘Who do we trust the most to be the President of the United States during these incredibly challenging times.”

The Republican Governor also addressed Romney’s now infamous 47 percent comment, saying he doesn’t think that comment has hurt Romney because that’s not what the majority of the American people care about.

“Here’s what I think the American people and voters are much smarter about than we give them credit for – they know that political candidates at time, when they’re being taped every minute of the day are going to say things inartfully, ” Christie said, pointing out that the current President is the one who claimed during his presidential campaign four years ago that he’d been to all 57 states in America (There are only 50). Christie said it’s clear that the President simply “misspoke.” Similarly, he said that Romney just said something “inelegantly.”

“But here’s what I know he really believes. What he believes is that everybody in America should have skin in the game. Everybody in America has to be part of a shared sacrifice to create opportunity for greatness again – for our people, and our country,” Christie explained, promising Romney would “convey that message on Wednesday night clearly and directly to the American people.

“And I’m telling you, Bob, Thursday morning you’re all going to be scratching your heads and saying, ‘Wow, we have a barn burner now for the next 33 days,’ Christie told the show’s host Bob Schieffer.

So confident in Romney’s win is Christie, that he declined to comment on whether or not he would consider running for President in 2016 if Romney loses this November.

“Mitt Romney’s gonna win, and so it’s a question that I don’t need to address,” he said. “I hope in 2016 to be workin’ hard for Mitt Romney’s reelection as President of the United States.”

No matter what happens in the debate, the media pundits will announce that Obama won. So the people who don't watch it (who are sure to outnumber those who do) will get their first impressions from pro-Obama soundbites. Of course some will also hear from family or friends who watched it but probably people will mostly react according to their previous political allegiance.

Expect the media especially during the first 24 to 48 hours afterwards to keep harping on how well Obama did and how Romney failed to "close the deal" with the American public. Even if Obama comes across as a cross between Zonker Harris, Eddie Haskell, and the John Belushi character in Animal House.

I hope Mitt is sparing with some one like Palin or Christy. Really get in Mitt’s face and get his blood up.

Debates alone are not going to do it.

WITHOUT BRIDGING THE GAP AMONG WHITE SINGLE WOMEN, ROMNEY LOSES.

Women in general are moved by emotion not by abstract numbers, graphs, and statistics about debt and budget deficits.

Run ads 24/7 that:

1. Show burning embassy buildings, our ambassador and ex-seals arriving in coffins with a tag line that Obama thinks all this is a “bump in the road.”

2. Show DNC delegates booing God during the DNC Convention.

3. Show Obama’s same old same old promises in his own words 2008 and 2012.

This is a hands down winner. It appeals to women. This is the one voting bloc that Obama needs to win.

The other thing Romney has going for him is that he is actually tall and handsome and standing next to Obama on stage will make Obama look like the little big ear’d geek that he is.

Exactly! The majority of voters will not view the debates so all they will see are the leftwing media reports and selected clips.

Unfortunately, mainstream media has a way of distilling a 90-minute "debate" into a ten second sound bite. Who whoever comes up with the best "There he goes again" or "You're no Jack Kennedy" line will win in the eyes of the media.

You can bet that Obama is well-rehearsed on at least a dozen of these soundbites and the "moderators" have lined up the questions in such a way where Obama will get a least 2-3 hangers right over the plate to smack out of the park.

Fortunately Romney really is a good debater who can think fast on his feet and no doubt he's got a few soundbites and comebacks in the can himself. It's sad that this is what decides debates these days but at least we are not running John McCain or Bob Dole this time around.

I don't doubt Romney knows ten times what Obama knows on any given policy issue. I am just afraid that McCain will show up instead of Newt.

I think obama is tall enough but like the guy in Chicago said, he has "the slims". Romney looks robust. Obama looks like a weasel.

Some say the election will be decided in the first 90 seconds of the debate.

This is dead nuts on target for what is required. Bush failed when he allowed the RATS and MSM to spew lie after lie after lie without vigorously pushing back. New tone garbage!

All I would ask is that Romney run his general election campaign like he ran the primaries. I was not a Romney supporter but his campaign instinctively knew when to go for the jugular to get the other guy’s numbers down. Gingrich can testify to that.Apparently, he has been neutered in the general election to date. Still waiting for the knives to come out and the bloodletting to begin. Hopefully the debates will be a kickoff.

Wait. “Pressing issues” will require the debate be canceled by Obama.
