“You can restrain a kid without hurting him.”

Yes you can but you shouldn’t try until you have
been properly trained. I know because I make a
living working with SED kids. More than 40hrs/year
training is mandated. At the beginning of each physical
intervention training the instructor passes around a
list of children unintentionally killed by group home
staff who are just trying to keep the kid safe. We
each read a short passage about a killed kid to the
rest of the class and it is a real eye opener. The
most common cause of death is from asphyxiation.

Yes, I do martial arts, specifically Judo. So I have the training on how to subdue someone safely without injuring them.

Time to institute tougher entrance qualification exams for elementary school teachers.

And here’s the yardstick:

Sorry but Judo will not cut it. There are specific methods as taught
in PART or PRO Act programs. Martial arts trained, well meaning
counselors are numerous among those who have actually hurt
kids in restraints

Fastest way to a lawsuit and possible criminal action. a "Trained individual" is held to a higher standard by the courts. I am a high school teacher and a Black belt in Modern Arnis, and Arnis de Mano. I used to train police recruits and do professional /staff development for various departments in the use of the PR-24 and Defensive tactical baton. I had to chance to sit in while department lawyers told us that each of us would be held to a higher standard because of our training and background. I specifically asked them about waht I could do in a school situation. I was basically told to put my hands up and take a step back.

I could take 19 five-year-olds in a fight. I also found out that I would not be very savory fare for a cannibal.

I recall when I was in 5th grade, a female student tried to stab a teacher with a pencil. She was never seen again in that school.

Today, it would be the teacher that would never been seen again.

Sounds like a pretty sweet setup. Tell everyone that their particular training is worthless and you have to go to these special courses. How much do you pay a year for them?

Eh, I’ve been told by lawyers that I could never get qualified to teach because of my disability. I don’t listen to lawyers. I’d rather do the right thing, and if I get fired, so be it. There are worse things in life than to be terminated for doing one’s job.

Yep, called it. :) 1,500 for certification that you could probably learn from a good sensei for peanuts.

I’ve done more in years of training than you could ever do in 5 days.

A certification that can be defended in court successfully and has been.

Further if you use techniques that are not approved by the district you can be terminated and open yourself to a civil suit. Yeah sure you can always get another job (Maybe) but I am not going to be sued and lose my house car etc.... over some punk that really needed his obama kicked.

From 1993-99 my next-door neighbor was a first grade teacher who was due for retirement in 2001. Just before I moved away she had a new “student” yank her chair out from under her as she was sitting down at her desk. She fell backwards and struck the wall with the back of her head-hard- knocking her silly for a few minutes. Doc said she had a concussion.

Two days later the little bastard’s “mommy” was on the playground laughing and bragging to all the other “mommies” about what her little thug had done.

“Yep, called it.....”

I’ve been taking training in PART or PRO Act or their predecessors for the past 16 years and have never paid a
dime for it. In fact our agency requires two PRO Act
trainings PER YEAR. We have in-house trainers (at least
two with black belts in martial arts) that are certified
to train our mental health workers in PRO Act. Since we
train during regular work hours we are actually paid
for our time.

The 40 hours of training I mentioned is the mininum re-
quired by Community Care Licensing. Our agency requires
an additional 20 hours per year. Training is on-going.
Verga is spot-on with the point regarding the legal
aspects of the training I am discussing here. If a job
(line staff)applicant mentions to our HR that he/she
has had martial arts training then red flags go up.
These folks are eligible to be hired as long as they
understand that they utilize our practices and pro-
cedures, not what they have learned in their martial
arts training.

BTW our agency is a level 14 sub-acute care resi-
dential facility for SED (Severely Emotionally Dis-
turbed) children. The subject boy of the article is
one that I encountered dozens of times over the years.

If you’re compensated for your time and your training - I have no issue with it. I am bothered when someone comes out and says, “your prior training is useless”, and then charges you an arm and a leg. Seen it too often with scammers.

Agreed.

On a separate note regarding the violent youngster in question,
I would submit that if the parents of this boy’s schoolmates
are not concerned then they should be. If the kid is bold enough
at 6 to assault a large adult he would have no problem forcing
his will on his peers. I have seen countless SED little guys get
angry enough to take-on much, much bigger kids w/out hesi-
tation. Taking on adults is another story.

Fire the teacher, hire someone else. Plenty of folks out of work who aren’t looking to win the lottery.
