The French Revolution was anti-clerical, anti-God, secular, atheistic revolution, he said. Rights didnt come from God. Yes they were for liberty, they were for equality but the government was the one who was going to order liberty not the individual. Government was going to order liberty; government was going to guarantee equality of result.
Thats where you get into this model of the government giving you rights, government telling you how to exercise those rights so government can arrange things. This is the Obama model so when you hear him say European socialism think French Revolution, think American Revolution. That was the debate at the time of our founders. It is the current debate today.
