The Federalists died of money mania. So did the Whigs. So will the GOP.

Actually, the Whigs died of EXACTLY the same fate that will likely be the death blow to the GOP, they refused to embrace social conservatism.

The two social conservative issues of the first half of the 19th century are EXACTLY the same as the two issues today: personhood and the sanctity of marriage.

The Whigs back then were fine with each state and/or the courts getting to decide if Blacks were persons or not. The GOP today seems to be fine with courts and states deciding if the unborn are persons or not.

The Whigs wanted a "big tent" that didn't exclude anyone, so they were fine ignoring Mormon polygamy even though thousands of years of Judeo-Christian tradition had defined marriage as one man and one woman. Today, the GOP seems content to do the same thing with same-sex "marriage."

The GOP was formed in the 1850s by Whigs who refused to be silent any longer, their first platform said that it was imperative that the "twin relics of barbarism - Polygamy, and Slavery" be abolished. Within a few years the Whigs were gone and the GOP became the dominant party for the rest of the century. If the GOP of today continues to ignore and marginalize social conservatives, it too will go the way of the Whigs.
