Premier Dalton McGuinty has announced he is resigning.

McGuinty, who has led the Liberals since 1996 and been premier since 2003, stunned his caucus Monday night announcing it’s time for “renewal” at the helm of the party.

“I’ve concluded that this is the right time for Ontario’s next Liberal Premier and our next set of ideas to guide our province forward,” McGuinty told his caucus. “Earlier today, I asked Yasir Naqvi, our party president, to convene a leadership convention at the earliest possible time.

North. South. Black. White. Man. Woman. As far as I’m concerned there are people that love freedom, people that hate freedom, and people in the middle that are too stupid to know the difference.

Agreed. IMO too many people in the World have fallen head over heels for European style socialism. That is a problem.

MgGuinty winning the federal Liberal leadership would be a gift for Harper. His campaign theme would be how the Libs turned Ontario into a have-not province.

Certainly. I am not exactly wringing my hands over the state of the Liberals. My hope is that it allows Harper to continue to change Canada for the better.

I would really love to have debt repayment entrenched in the budget, as an automatic line. I really hate that the government gets to decide how much to pay down. I once figured out that a $37 billion dollar guarenteed payment, since 1992, would have seen us be debt free by 2005.

At the moment, it is my understanding that he’s a placeholder. Somebody to keep things going until there is a leadership contest.

I know Justin Trudeau has talked about running for the leadership, though I think he’s not suitable for the position at the moment, so there must be something in the works.

McGuinty has lied and raised taxes for the last time...

three straight elections, three no new taxes promises, and a big tax increase after each election !

The word slimy comes to mind when thinking about McGuinty. He’s not only wrong about everything he’s greasy.

Um, sorry ....I don’t read ANYTHING at thestar.com. Nothing personal. :)

Buh bye, “Premier Dad”. Don’t let the door hit your you-know-what on the way out.

The federal and Ontario Liberals have a loose relationship. In Canada, provincial parties usually go on their own way. After almost a decade, McGuinty wore out his welcome as Premier and running a minority government isn’t easy. The NDP is well poised to form the next Ontario government. They could end being a disaster like under Bob Rae as they are socialists.

Nothing unfortunate about that. Watching the Liberals go from lukewarm to cold and stiff would be great entertainment.
