I’ll say it. Powells military career was a joke. Read his own autobiography. Its him stumbling from race quota assignment to the next. It’s fellowship here, staff there.
When he finally was assigned to a combat division, he was a dismal failure, utterly unqualified. He explains that his commander was to blame.
His crowning achievement (according to him) was the building of a buffalo soldier monument in Kansas.
In the Gulf War, he was a politician in DC.
Everything successful there was Schwartzkopf. Powell impeded him at every turn.
In Vietnam he covered up the Mi Lai atrocity when it was reported to him. When stationed in Korea, made his men repeatedly watch the movie “Brians Song” to help promote racial harmony. Way over half his career was in DC.
He is a military version of Obama. He could speak without a jive accent, and so they perfumed him and sent this little prince on his ride. But he is worthless, and always was.

I encourage everyone to read Powells bio, and then Norman Schwartzkopfs,,, back to back. One is a military bio, filled with combat assignments, and being a true leader. The other is a whining story of racial grievance, as someone who went to Vietnam became a pure politician.
Especially liked the parts where Norman in the gulf war was deeply concerned about battlefield prep, and the lives of our invasion force. Powell wanted to rush over the prep and kick off faster because he feared the diplomatic effort might come to some sort of settlement. He wanted to launch at a time chosen for diplomatic reasons while NOrman only thought of it in military terms.
Powell sucks, always has.
One can hardly blame Powell. His military career and his career in politically appointed jobs in Washington D.C. WAS an “affirmative action” process from start to finish, and he knows it.
He was brite, well spoken, easy going, good listener, good schmoozer, average administrator, but as time went he became a divisive player on the teams he was part of and from start to finish he never was an idea person or a big intellect or thinker.
He was probably more than once an example of the Peter Principle - rising to one’s level of incompetence, but affirmative action held his star in place long after its sunset was due.
If he was - in his own mind - such a positive example of affirmative action, then so too must Obama be one.
I am sure there were always better black officers in the ranks of our military that deserved more than they got, and more than Powell deserved, in terms of public recognition, but then they didn’t have Powell’s political connections.
I am now confident that Powell committed acts of treason while serving under Republicans. He was never conservative and has always been a secret hack. If I were king, he would swing.
I remember him telling a story on 60 Minutes that when he first reported to the Army as a 2nd Lt. he had an LBJ sticker on his VW Beetle and some crusty old Sgt. was giving in him hell about it and he decided never to let his political beliefs to be known again.
That story told me all I needed to know about him. He was just following orders from the Pubbies, didn’t really believe it.
