Unions Pray (Literally!) for Victory on Michigan Collective Bargaining Ballot Initiative
Townhall.com ^ | October 28, 2012 | Kyle Olson

Some people believe God is above the minutia of day-to-day American political battles, especially those involving power and money.

But Michigan union members obviously think He will be on their side, if they only ask nicely enough. They are gathering a few days before Election Day to pray for assistance in their effort to enshrine collective bargaining privileges in the state constitution.

Proposal 2 is a power grab by unions. The proposed amendment would guarantee that provisions of union collective bargaining agreements would trump any existing or current state laws. Its approval would probably mean the end to many recent education reforms recently passed by the state.

This proposal is flagging in the polls, so the unions are pulling out all the stops.

Former Michigan state Rep. Mary Valentine sent a message to her followers announcing a special event – a “Candle Vigil to Show Support for Proposal #2.” What is with liberals and standing in the dark holding candles?

Her announcement continued:

“We will have a short prayer some songs and a couple key note speakers and briefly discuss GOTV for the 4 days before election and how your members and their families can make a difference on Nov. 6th. I thank each of you in advance for all your current help and work in this election but time is running short 14 days before we find out if we made that difference in the protection of our collective bargaining rights.”

So the unions are trying to call in the heavy hitters to ensure victory – and we’re not even talking about James Hoffa or Richard Trumka.

After all, they can’t hold a candle to God.

I personally think they've wildly overplayed heir hand and angered even those who supported them.

So essentially, this gives unions a pocket veto on any legislation on collective bargaining, right? Why have elections? Why work?

Their luck has run out and the people they've bullied are fighting back. They've even managed to create a wedge between private and public sector unions not to mention the infighting going on within the various factions.

Why work?

Well if it passes work won't be an issue.

Why are they worried about a ballot initiative?

All they need is some judge to declare any voting result they don’t like to be unconstitutional.

IMHO

"I personally think they've wildly overplayed heir hand and angered even those who supported them."

And that may be part of what's pushing Romney higher in Michigan: Many people are afraid Obama + more Union Power = the death of prosperity in Michigan.

Prop 2 belongs in the trash. The unions don’t need the extra money. They don’t help their workers anymore. They spend it all on political stuff. My dad, a former Reagan Democrat, got five different voting guides from the UAW already. He’s not voting their way either.

A judge may be able to overturn election results but one thing a judge cannot do is open the State Constitution and make changes that will guarantee that Public Sector unions get first dibs on State monies or that they can force people to pay dues against their will. These items are the true reason behind this proposal. They watched Scott Walker make changes that take away the Union’s right to automatically make the State be their enforcer in terms of Union Dues and they want to make certain the same thing can’t happen in Michigan. If this is voted down, a judge cannot give them what they are looking for.

I just hope Rick Snyder learned something from this episode.

He promised to work to keep right to work off the ballot if the unions didn’t push this issue.

I think right to work needs to be on the ballot next time around.

“If this is voted down, a judge cannot give them what they are looking for.”

Progressives can subvert anything. Watch them try to distort and de-legitimize anything that doesn’t go their way. (Progressives always find a way to undermine foundations.)

IMHO

I agree with you. Rick Snyder has done some good things but has been weak - maybe smartly so in such a union heavy state - but weakness doesn’t work when you are dealing with unions. The one thing I must admit in terms of unions is that, even though this proposal will likely fail, it works for them in the sense that Union households will turn out to vote based on the ballot proposals and this will work to Obama’s advantage. Those who may not have bothered to come out to vote will show up and vote. That, in itself, gives me doubts as to any chance of Romney taking Michigan. (Of course, with any luck, the opposite could occur and those against the initiatives will turn out in droves but I am not counting on it.)

I believe that, in such a polarized climate, a judge trying to pull off such a stunt would cause an uprising that the Unions cannot afford to risk. Wisconsin is an indicator of what can happen if you play your hand too heavily. Not to say it can’t happen, but I don’t believe that Unions would want to pick now as a time to bring this battle to the forefront.

Ms. Valentine needs some lessons in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
