Hurricane Sandy Rapidly Intensifies As It Nears South Jersey Landfall (Pictures)

It’s looking bad out there, as the above photo of Atlantic City, NJ indicates. Any hopes that Hurricane Sandy had been “overhyped” — that its storm surge would underwhelm, like Irene’s did in many places; that computer models’ forecast of last-minute deepening was implausible and wouldn’t happen; or perhaps that Sandy would simply turn away and go out to sea — have now been dashed. A disaster is underway. The only question is how severe it will end up being.

What’s happening is precisely what the computer models have said, consistently for days now, was going to happen. Sandy is strengthening in the hours before landfall — down to an incredible, record-setting 937.5 millibars, according to the most recent reconnaissance data, a drop of 6 millibars in less than 2 hours (!). At least one buoy, about 100 miles south of Montauk, NY, is reporting extreme wind gusts equivalent to Category 3 strength, although I have some doubts about that data. Regardless, the recon planes flying over the storm have measured increasing wind speeds near the center, prompting the NHC to estimate that Sandy now has 90 mph sustained winds at the surface. That suggests we could see a few 100+ mph gusts right on the coast. This is presently closer to a Category 2 hurricane than it is to a tropical storm.

Sandy is pushing an enormous storm surge toward the heavily populated coastline, well ahead of its center, as it makes the long-forecast sharp left turn that will force the full brunt of this uniquely destructive storm directly into the mid-Atlantic coast. More specifically, it now appears that Sandy will hit South Jersey or Delaware Bay this evening around 8:00 PM local time. Check out the NCEP NAM model forecast from WeatherBell:

Grew up in Monmouth County. I'm thinking all those people who built homes right next to the sea wall in Sea Bright (old Trade Winds beach club) are wishing they hadn't about now.

The company I work for is in Vineland. Friends and employer all taking it on the chin. Not good.

The good news is that is has rapidly picked up forward speed. You do not want to see this baby stall along the coast similar to what happened earlier in the year down in Louisiana. And the millibar record is for the NE area of the US north of DC. Not an Atlantic record by a long shot.

Dear Heavenly Father, you have spared us many times in the past from these extraordinary acts of nature. We ask You Father to give the people in this storms way the where with all to leave but also the courage to give it their best with the outcome. Have Divine Mercy Oh, Lord! We ask these things the Name of The Father and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit, Amen!

The storm is close to landfall (1-2 hours) and falling apart. Its forward speed increase means it wont hit at high tide and also it cannot wrap up anything from its western end. On its southeast side, there is almost nothing in the way of moisture. See loop below. Not saying it wont be bad and north and north east of the storm will get hit with storm surge, but the forward speed increase will mean worse case scenario wont happen. Could be one of the worst coastal flooding in that area though.

Thanks for that update. Believe me, I’ve watched enough of these things. Everything you’ve pointed out is all good! Everything can always be worse. I hope the good Neighbors in NJ, MD, VA, NY and all surrounding states help each other out!

RFH class of ‘74 here. Had a lot of friends who went to RBC. Loved Sea Bright back in the day. Even had an apartment across the street from the Driftwood Beach Club. Unfortunately, I think Sandy is going to remake Sea Bright, and not in a good way.

Looks like you're near the northern tip of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

The eye of the hurricane is headed right at you! Stay safe and dry, Friend.
