I don't know about your wife's situation but it's not uncommon to stop checking patients who had been cancer free for a substantial length of time. My mother encountered that. It's possible that may be a factor.

Congratulations on the long marriage and I hope for many more!

Five years is the arbitrary time when they consider you cured. However, my husband lasted nine years after his first cancer operation, and then he died. I am over 70 now and I had cancer four years ago. I don’t consider myself cured, though, and I won’t be able to get any more mamograms to see if I am free of cancer, according to Obama’s plans.
