A person can be brilliant in his or her profession, and a total dolt in his or her personal list. Happens all the time. In fact, more often than not, truly brilliant people (academically) are pitifully lacking in social skills.
Are you arguing that the “surge” Petraeus devised was not successful? Or that earning four stars and a Ph.D. from Princeton are not marks of a brilliant person?
I don’t know that anyone is arguing that having an affair (or more) is brilliant. It’s stupid. It’s immoral, and it has now cost him everything that matters in this life.
