Zoo Boise break-in leads to death of monkey

Zoo Boise remained closed Saturday as police conducted an investigation into an overnight break-in at the zoo's primate building that resulted in the death of a male Patas monkey, one of two at the zoo.

"It's very disturbing that someone would intentionally break into the zoo and harm an animal," said Sgt. Ted Snyder of the Boise Police Department in a statement. "We're doing all we can to find who did this."

Police said they are seeking two males wearing dark clothing spotted by a security guard at 4:30 a.m. outside the fence near the primate exhibit. Both fled, one of them heading into the interior of the zoo. Police used a thermal imager in searching the 11-acre zoo grounds but didn't find the person.

"I've been here for 15 years and we haven't had anything like this happen," he said. "This is very upsetting, obviously. This is a community zoo. It's unfortunate that we have to let kids know that something like this happens. Monkeys are always among the most favorite animals here."

The article is poorly written...the 2 men were spotted near the fence outside the primate area (not a perimeter fence). The injured monkey is discovered near the perimeter fence. My guess is they were stealing a monkey. So they get one, manage to injure it and go back for another when they are found out and take off in opposite directions. 11 acre zoo, easy for them to elude zoo personnel.

Looks like they’ve caught the perp. As I (and others) guessed this doesn’t seem to have been a deliberate monkey murder.

More along the lines of: 22-year-old idiot gets drunk, decides he wants to steal a monkey. Breaks in, nabs monkey, puts it in his coat. Monkey understandably bites idiot drunk, idiot drunk whacks monkey in the head with tree branch.

Yea saw that. Never underestimate the stupidity of drunks. “I know let’s go steal a monkey!”

I stand by my earlier statement about moving to people...though maybe not as violence minded as I thought the guy was, on a path to grand theft and larceny.

Unfortunately drunks who end up injuring or killing monkeys through foolishness or negligence can end up if they’re not careful killing human beings through foolishness or negligence.

If this guy is smart, he will consider this the biggest alarm bell of his life, and pay heed.
