Nearly two years after the Jasmine Revolution brought down the government, Tunisians are still not satisfied, and renewed riots started last week over economic difficulties once again, sparking concerns over more Islamist unrest.
The economic struggles that ignited the self-immolation of a despairing pushcart vendor set off what days later became known as the country's Jasmine Revolution. The decades-old regime of President Zine al Abidine Ben Ali was ousted by protesters in January 2011, setting off the region-wide Arab Spring uprisings.
But in the final analysis, the country is still struggling. And Tunisians still take to the streets and clash violently with police when things get tough, appearing not to know how else to solve their problems.
At least 200 people were injured when unemployed Tunisians attacked police in the streets of Siliana, a city on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The demonstrators were protesting the lack of development funds for the town, they said, demanding that Tunis fire the regional governor and that local officials resign. Of those, 17 people were blinded by birdshot fired by riot police. Among them were two international journalists, including France 24 television correspondent David Thomson. Residents blocked entrances to the city, setting tires afire on the roads.
Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali refused to back down, stating on national television that he would not remove the governor. Interior Minister Ali Larayed also appeared on national TV, calling for calm, and asking the people of Siliana to protest calmly and accept dialogue.

Ah those social engineering democrates, another success story
This whole “Arab Spring” thing, ain’t looking so good is it?
Sure. Like what the Vietnamese did to the ethnic Chinese once they were free of Yankee interlopers, united at last under a free communist government./sarc
Nope.I don’t recall the last time any muslim country went in the right direction, do you? Because they can’t; they hate the West, they hate Judeo-Christian society, capitalism, democracy, freedom, etc. because their book tells them so. It’s a combination of blind obedience to a so-called religion and envy. Period. Nothing’s changed in 1,400 years and it’s not going to. They are our eternal enemy based upon their beliefs in that book, which they believe is the literal word of god (allah in their minds) and cannot be changed. They will either change us to their way of thinking (as they’ve been trying to do thru war for the past 14 centuries) or as they do now, thru immigration and terrorism, or we change them, dead. There is no peaceful coexistence with them because they are a cancer on the human body, they believe the world is in two parts, the house of islam (their world) and the house of war (our world) and they will not rest until the entire world is in their house, by any means. I’m always surprised how simple it is, and how incredibly ignorant most Americans (Westerners in general) are about these matters. This ignorance could cost them their life, much less their freedom. Wake up, America.
Yeah, least we forget, they told us the entire revolution started with this one veggie vendor in Tunis.
Well that guy is dead now and so are Gaddafi and Mubarak, but Ahmadinejad,Obama and Bashir Assad are all off golfing, and and the entire middle east is on fire.
No, that means Burlap Insane Obama-lama-dingdong will be talking trash soon about he freed the mooslums.
Many Americans believe what they see on TV, much snoozing goin’ on.
Pretty much says it, and yes, Americans (who want to be liked) aren't willing to face the fact that Islam is and will always be at odds with a Constitutional Republic such as ours.
Imagine an aquatic creature going to take over your neighborhood, which would require it to be inundated with ten feet of water so it can breathe. If you are to continue living there as you do now you cannot accommodate them, and if they are to live there, they cannot abide you. It is one or the other in any given place.
The backwards of islam & the resulting byproduct (muslims) has made man laws inferior to allah’s laws. Islam, allah & muslims are all perfect just like communism.
Very well done. It would serve America well if they would read and understand these facts.
Most of America will never even hear of these facts. Jon Stewart isn’t going to go on the air and reveal that his pal Hussein is incompetent.
Ultimately, governors should be elected by voters. Will he push for that? Of course not - that would diminish his power.
Economic difficulties? Who could have seen that coming? After the Arab Springy Hope and Change thing, wasn’t a diverse and vibrant economy all but guarantied? I mean who wouldn’t want to set up a business or vacation in a nice quiet little shiara law country run by the muslim brotherhood? Oh well, at least Egypt or Libya have turned out better. No problems in those places like there were before. If not those, then Syria, Jordan or France after they have been “liberated.”
